    1. Grandma's Little White Cap
    2. Vee L. Housman
    3. Me, again! Standing on my feet in front of the computer and, frankly, just ignoring all the aches and pains. There has been something that has been on my mind for a number of years regarding Grandma's little white cap. What little white cap? You know, the sort of a little ruffled cap perched on the back of the head and tied under the chin that the old(?) Mennonites wore. But here's the thing of it. Grandma wasn't a Mennonite. OK, here's the situation. Grandma was Katherine (ESHELMAN) BRYAN. Her parents were John ESHELMAN and Veronica/Fanny (__?__). Katherine was born in 1831 near Mastersonville, Mt. Joy(?) Twp., Lancaster Co. She descended from the Swiss immigrant Heinrich ESHELMAN (b 1707) and his wife Barbara KINDIG. The ESHELMAN family was certainly Mennonite (or Dunkards). However, by the time she married Edward BRYAN in 1852 it appears that she had become a Lutheran and in 1862 she was baptized as an adult in the Christ Evangelical Church in Elizabethtown, Lancaster Co. Well, to me it doesn't seem that she strayed ALL that far from the Mennonite faith. But here's what has been on my mind. I have a photograph (or a sketch) of her in her later years and there she is with that little white Mennonite cap on. Granted, she may have continued to wear it out of habit or because most of the local women wore such a cap. But I guess my REAL question over these years is was she EXCOMMUNICATED by the Mennonite Church because she married a Lutheran? Did she wear it because she was still a Mennonite at heart and refused to give up the Mennonite ways? And I guess the bottom line is--IF she had been excommunicated by the Mennonite Church, how did she feel about being officially severed from her church roots. In the eyes of the Mennonite Church and the Lutheran Church in those days, how did they view her and--in her own eyes--, how did she view herself in regard to her own personal beliefs in God? One thing is for certain. On my living room wall Katherine Eshelman Bryan still stares down at me with her little wire-rimmed glasses perched on her nose and with her hair, parted in the middle, pulled back underneath her little white cap. But do you know what? When I checked on that picture this very minute, I noticed a little sparkle in her eye that I had never seen before!! Now, I wonder how I could have ever overlooked such a twinkle!! vee ==== PENNA-DUTCH Mailing List ==== Forgot how to SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE? 1. FYI: Netiquette and Copyright laws
    2. x-no-archive: yes Hello, FYI. Recently had a problem with someone posting a private email to a list. The man who did this insisted he had the right to do whatever he pleased with an email sent to him. This is not only considered improper by most people but according to copyright laws, illegal. Since 1989, any written material created privately and originally is considered copyrighted whether or not the person specifically says it. The writer is the sole owner and no one has the right to reprint or repost the article without permission. This applies to private emails. Just because a letter was sent to you, it does not give you any rights to it. (This is akin to receiving a magazine in the mail and then posting it on the net.) I think most people would take it as common courtesy to ask permission first. But to those who feel they own it if it was sent to them, think again. The man who did was removed from that list! There are several sites on the net where copyright laws are explained. 1. SORBER/BOETKER marriage: Germantown PA 1760
    2. RICK CARPENTER
    3. Hello, I have a reference to a marriage of Johann Wilhelm BOETKER to Anna Veronica SORBER, 7 Dec 1760 in the Germantown Reformed Church, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Does anyone have any further information on either of these two individuals? I think that Anna Veronica may be the Verena SURBER (born ca 1730) listed as being "qualified as usual" on 29 May 1735 with her brother Henry and father Henry. The mother Hannah/Kleinanna was listed as a passenger, but no further mention of her has ever been found after arrival. They arrived in Philadelphia on 8 May 1735 aboard the ship Mercury. They were from Steinmaur, Dielsdorf District, Canton Zu"rich, Switzerland. Father Henry died in old Frederick County (the area that is now Shenandoah County), Virginia in 1754. Son Henry's children were all born in Germantown, but he and family moved to Virginia by about 1752. Verena/Anna Veronica could have: 1. gone back to Germantown to marry, 2. stayed in Germantown when her family left -- she was 22 in 1752 (but this was unlikely for a single young female), or 3. somehow have been placed when young with another family under guardianship after her mother died probably soon after arriving. Was there much travel *back and forth* between the German areas of Pennsylvania and Virginia by persons other than ministers? My Swiss German lines seem to have left Pennsylvania en masse for the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia by the 1750s. In the earliest generations, my Swiss Germans tended to marry only other Swiss Germans. 3. Good Evening Folks: Can anyone identify the PAULUS ANTONI age 22 on this ship? It is suspected he is from Alsace and perhaps associated with the Bernhart KLEIN/CLINE family before their emigration. The Cline's origins are identified as being from Hirschland Lutheran KB and the families were associated in PA before moving on to NC. Annette Burgert has identified several members of the Klien/Cline family in Alsace to PA some of which we have identified West of the Catawba River in NC as early as 1751 PAULUS ANTHONI m. Veronica/Sophonica SECHLER, dau of Johannes of Northampton and Montgomery Co., PA. Some children's births are found at Falkner's Swamp Lutheran Church and Goshenhoppen all in Berks Co. Several other children's birth's unaccounted for. PHILIP ANTHONI of Northhampton Co, PA married Anna Barbara Sechler, dau of Johannes and these two families appear West of the Catawba River in NC in 1760s. They appear to be brothers and having married sisters. Philip is not found on a ships list. Perhaps under 16. There was another unidentified brother who had at least one son, Philip, whom Paulus reared, who was a RW Pensioner and says he was reared by his uncle. There was a Johannes Anthoni, age 32, on the next ship (St. Andrew) into port who is suspected to be the missing brother. Can anyone identify these families? A Paulus Anthony was on ship Brigantine 1736 which was identified by Annette Burgert in the Langensoultzbach Lutheran KB as son of Adam and having married Maria Ursula Sadler and lived in NJ. There is no known connection between these two Paulus Anthonys. Researchers have failed to identify the Anthony origins among the several families from Alsace who were on the ship Lydia. Watch for a later post on other families... Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much, Lorena

    1. A Bit of Cemetery Nonsense!
    2. Vee L. Housman
    3. Dear, dear Group, Because of your recent loving messages about my "tush" problem, I just wanted to let you know that in spite of it all, there is just no way that I can help wanting to share a few giggles with you. I had written this story this past summer and had shared it with only a few of you. It was a "sequel" to a story that I had just written then regarding an exciting day that I had "digging" up information in our local cemeteries for a descendant of one of our pioneer families. I offer it in grateful thanks for your concerns for me: THE SUGAR ANT To those of you who responded so generously today to my original posting, I thought I would share this bit of observation I made only yesterday (Sunday) after my Friday’s adventures in the cemeteries. You see, when I first set off to take the pictures of the tombstones, I knew that some of the inscriptions were worn and I wanted to take along some flour to dust over the inscriptions so that it would bring out the carvings. Well, since my flour supply is pretty low, I thought I’d use powdered sugar instead--hey, I probably have a ten-year supply of it! :-D I poured a generous amount of sugar into a clean plastic margarine tub, clamped the lid on it and off I went. Well, when I tried to apply the sugar onto the tombstone with a dry sponge, it just wouldn’t stick and so, at least, I learned a lesson there. Flour works, powdered sugar doesn’t. By the time I clamped the lid back onto the sugar container, I noticed an ant had already discovered the sugar treasure. Oh, well, let him be--I was going to have to throw out the sugar anyway. Well, it wasn’t until yesterday that I got around to throwing out the sugar. When I removed the lid, I noticed that the ant was still there; however, he was dead. Now, what did he die of? Suffocation? Old age? Homesickness? Or did he die the way he always dreamed of--in a vast wonderful white world of delicious SUGAR?? Before I emptied the contents into the waste basket, I took a closer look at the ant and do you know what I saw? He had a great big smile on his face and a white mustache of pure powdered sugar on his upper lip! It was if he had died thinking, “What a way to go!!” Vee L. I am sorry to say I cannot do any other names in Prothonotary but my own, all my name lists are names in my family or my husbands, so it goes for the books I do for my name lists.Any name you see in my post I will give you what I have on that name. I do the GenWeb lookups for 1 GIVEN name w/1 SURNAME, 1 record at a time &(See:http://www.rootsweb.com/~paberks/berks.htm) 1name only at a time, please & the lookups as stated only . BTW: It is Hornheim, I checked w/ _GEO_ Hornheim: Part of Vahingen, county of Ludwigsburg(LB), Baden-W"urttemberg. According to my Atlas it is NW of Stuggart, approx. 20 K's. There is a Tiefenbach, nw of Hornheim & S. of Sinsheim in the Kraichgau, about 35 K's from Hornheim, in my AutoAtlas. There are many Tiefenbach's - 17 in the Atlas - in Germany. This is all for now. Sylvia & Doug P.S. hope there aren't too many typo's. ==== PENNA-DUTCH Mailing List ==== We get too soon old and too late smart!
