    2. Carol Aldinger
    3. Greetings! I have a puzzle for which I need help please. My grandfather's pedigree chart shows his grandfather Jacob Gossert/Gossard as being born in "Antrim township, Cumberland, PA. Further down the chart, when a county is mentioned, it is definately followed by the Co. for county as m: may 7 1801 in Washington Co., MD or d: 1862 in Marion, Franklin Co., PA The library catalog at the FamHistCenter lists the following for Antrim Antrim Township, Franklin Co, PA Incorporated in 1745 etc. So is Antrim Township in Franklin or Cumberland Co? Hope someone can enlighten me as I have a microfilm of a very old census and don't know what county to check for. 2. David Huffines
    3. I am a veteran of WWII but I salute the veterans of all wars. They served when their country called, some, including my friends, gave their lives. "War is Hell" and everyone should be grateful for the sacrifice our men and women made on their country's behalf. > I have a real problem with people who take out their frustrations on the Vietnam veterans. Don't blame them - they didn't plan the war, they didn't start the war, they would rather not have been there. If you must sound off, do it to the country's leaders, not the soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen! They were wars of the United States of America, no the veteran's wars. > My country, right or wrong, is still my country! I will do all I can to correct and improve it, but I will not condemn those who answered its call, in any and all wars. I know of no better country in the world, do you? > David Huffines, Chaplain (Capt) U S Army - Now a retired civilian (A Signal Corps Officer in WWII) David Huffines ==== PENNA-DUTCH Mailing List ==== Visit other PDL listmember webpages. 1. RE: Town of Irwin (aka Irwin Station), Westmoreland County, PA
    2. Irwin is near Greensburg, about a 45 minute drive from downtown Pittsburgh (today). It's just off the Pennsylvania turnpike. (Rolling Rock beer is made in Latrobe, near there!) My parents' friends lived in Irwin and I visited there a lot when I was younger (in the 60's and 70's). There was a lot of farmland, but no rivers that would have caused any trouble like the Johnstown floods. There are also no ports near there, unless one counts Pittsburgh as a port.... - Jeff R ---------- > From: Dgin4Roots@aol.com > To: PENNA-DUTCH-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Town of Irwin (aka Irwin Station), Westmoreland County, PA > Date: Tuesday, November 11, 1997 12:05AM > > Can anyone tell me if there are any records of train passengers going into or > out of Irwin, PA for the years 1887 through 1889? > > Also, I believe this railroad goes to Pittsburgh, it that correct? However it is necessary to understand that many who "neglected to serve" did so in accordance to their conscience, and were acting upon many of the principles our PA Dutch ancestors would have valued as well. I have heard the horor stories of how the Vietnam experience has affected the lives of US soldiers, and it's not a pretty picture. Although I empathize with the pain the war has caused, I see nothing positive in our involvement in Vietnam. It is a myth to believe that this war, or the Korean war, or the Persian Gulf war have helped to preserve our "freedoms". Any war, no matter, how it is justified, is wrong because it devalues human life to the point that it seems necessary to kill. For me Veteran's Day is a time of mourning, not a time to celebrate victory. Darvin L. 3. In response to a question as to whether Adam Staub was a Hessian soldier: My reference to his marriage in Dr. Fisher's book was found in Part VII, titled "MARRIAGES OF SOME PENNSYLVANIA SOLDIERS AND PATRIOTS OF THE REVOLUTIONARY PERIOD". Further, in Dr. Fisher's book of "THE SNYDER COUNTY PIONEERS" he says: "ADAM STAUB was assessed with 20 acres and personal property in Heidelberg Township, York County in 1779. Soon thereafter he came to what is now Snyder County. In 1774, he and his wife, Eva, had their son, John George, baptized at the old Zion Lutheran Church, north of Freeburg. Adam served as a private in Captain Charles Meyer's (Moyer's) Company of the Northumberland County Militia." ARickard@compuserve.com ==== PENNA-DUTCH Mailing List ==== Post your PD Holiday recipes!

    1. Veteran's Day
    2. Linnea Miller
    3. Hi All! My husband is a veteran of the Vietnam conflict, having been "selected" a few years out of high school in the mid-'60's. He doesn't talk much about his participation, but I know this has affected his life and attitudes sometimes in surprising ways. He did his duty & served - which many young Americans at the time neglected to do. This was a significant conflict, one which tore at the heart of our nation as had not been experienced since the Civil War. We continue to honor the veterans of this militaty action to help them bring closure to the effects of their experiences during their service to our country. We must always remember that we *continue* to have our freedoms due to the participation of these many people who served our country, too many of them giving the ultimate sacrifice. Saturday a Vietnam Memorial was dedicated in Lebanon PA - it's a beautiful monument to honor the 44 young men from our county who gave their lives in Vietnam. The service was from the hearts of many - and the monument has a "heart, also (a purple heart has been placed within the casting). Even with the damp & chilly weather of the day (reminiscent of the dedication of The Wall in Washington DC quite a few years back, there were spots on the bottom of my feet I could not feel for a while!!) there were easily a few hundred people there. The committee had a three-fold goal, which has now been completed: in 1995 the Vietnam Veteran's Moving Wall visited Lebanon for 7 days; many books about the conflict have been placed in the high school libraries to help young people understand this military action; and the Memorial has been dedicated. Project Welcome Home has finished its contribution to the community - and it is a job "well-done"! Thank you to *all* of our veterans - your task at times was not an easy one. We cannot "see" the actions you were involved in through your eyes, ears or emotions......but we want you to know how much you are loved and appreciated for your participation in the armed services for our country. In honor of all who gave the ultimate sacrifice: "Not for fame or reward. Not for place or for rank. Not lured by ambition or goaded by necessity. But in simple obedience to duty as they understood it. These men suffered all, sacrificed all, dared all......and died." Thank you and may God bless each of you and your families! -Linnea ==== PENNA-DUTCH Mailing List ==== New? Looking for a quick connection?
