Don, these were ALL Mennonites--this came from the Mennonite census that was created for tax lists for the Mennonites in the Palatine who had settled there after coming from Switzerland. Sorry I didn't make that clear. Some became Brethren later on in PA. Joan

    2. Hi Sylvia: Thank you for the lookup offer. I am trying to reconcile the families with the surname WEGLEY/WEGERLINE/etc. (as many spellings as you can think of). My ancestor was Paulus Wegerlin who came to this country on the ship, Johnson Galley which landed at Phila. Sept. 18, 1732. His family settled in Warwick and E. Cocalico Twps. Lancaster Co. PA. Children: Jacob, Phillip (went to Somerset Co.), John, Adam (went to Berks Co.), Barbara m. Jacob Rudisill, Anna Clara, Ottilia and Catharine. Other family #1 - John Michael Weigley (Hans Michel Wageli) in Salford Twp. (can't remember which county) as early as 1734 and possibly earlier. Other family #2 - John Wegley b. 1718 in Northampton Co. PA has a nice list of decendants. Do you see anything on any of the above - anything to suggest they were the same or separate families? Thanks for your help. If you need research in Hamilton Co. OH (Cincinnati) please ask. Barbara Wegley Anderson

    1. [PENNA-DUTCH-L] Re: [PENNA-WEIGEL
    2. Joan: Your recent message included the surname WEIGEL. I have seen this surname in Lancaster and York Cos. especially. My family surname is WEGLEY/WEIGLEY/WEGERLIN/WEGERLE - earliest person in America was Paulus Wegerlin and his family who landed at Phila. Sept. 18, 1732 on the Johnson Galley. They lived in E. Cocalico Twp. and Warwick Twp. Lancaster Co. PA until the deaths of Paulus and wife, Ottilia Bayer; hers the latter about 1765. The children scattered to other PA counties. Another person of about the same name was John Michael WAGELI/WEIGLEY who lived in Lower Salford Twp. (can't remember which Co. at this time) in 1734 - he may have come to this country much earlier with the Palatines. My question is: The WEIGEL families in Lancaster and York Cos. seem to be a completely different family that either of the WEIGLEY's above. Do you feel this is true? Thanks, Barbara Wegley Anderson

    3. Rhea in TN is probably related to John Rhea who was a long time TN rep to Congress beginning about 1800, his uncle was Archibald Rhea, early gov. of NC who Rhea County TN is named for. Sister of John Rhea, Elizabeth, married Martin Luther Coyner in Augusta County VA before 1800, this family said to be Scotch-Irish, descended from Archibald, Duke of Argyle, Scotland. This family sought refuge in Ireland after battles for Scottish assession to the British throne, and they came over here in mid-1700's, thus called Scotch-Irish. Many settled first in PA and then moved into VA. There is a Rhea list and they have a lot more info than I do. The name evolved into Ree, Ray, Rea and other similar variations and is found in great numbers in the South. Finley (Findlay, Findly) and Irwin are also names found in PA and VA. Interesting letter.
