    1. Re: [PENNA-DUTCH-L] Blacksmith - Whitesmith ??
    2. The whitesmith took the job of blacksmith to a higher level. Not necessarily in degree of skill but in attention to detail. Those 18th and early 19th century utensils made from what appears to be steel are the work of the whitesmith. He was very accomplished with a hammer and fine-toothed file and his final product has the look of stainless (think white) steel. I have heard and read two schools of thought regarding his metalurgy. Some say he worked with steel i.e., very high temperatures and carbon but others have challenged this saying most good blacksmiths could whitesmith if they wanted to take the time, pay for more efficient bellows and charcoal. Anyway, the whitesmith was so accomplished that some were gunsmiths. The gunsmith was probably the most technically competent person in colonial and frontier America. To make a long rifle or scattergun from scratch was way beyond the skill of most men.

    3. Ann, Can you define this Michael Pfautz and Catherine Neff a little better as to their parents, etc. I hate those WFT estimates. They are so broad, they mean nothing. I do not know why they have used them in many cases, as I know that the three "trees" which I gave them had original dates and they changed many of them to their vague data. Anyway, in case you don't really have specific data on some of the people in your posting, here is something to use: Jonas Hoover was b. 1746 in Carroll Co., Md. and d. June 15, 18928 Mary Hoover m. 2. Volchek
    3. The only Susanna I have in my database was the daughter of Leonard Vandergrift. He was born in 1718 and died August 28, 1769. I don't know who Susanna married, but she couldn't be the Susanna who married William Hadley. They tended to beat the same names to death so I wouldn't doubt that they meet up somewhere. Do you have any more information on Susanna V. Hadley? Jean K.

    1. Re: [PENNA-DUTCH-L] Dewalt Pfautz and Hoover Families
    2. Regarding DeWalt Pfautz and Hoover families. There has been a lot of confusion on the various 18th century Pfautz immigrants. The most recent and most complete research has been done by Dr. John Scott Davenport. His work which may be accessed thru LDS formed the basis for a book By Audrey Woodruff, dealing with the family of Jacob Pfautz and wife Magdalina. It was his daughter Anna Margareta who married Andreas Hoover and were the ancestors of Pres. Herbert Hoover. According to the Woodruff book DeWalt (Theobald) Pfautz joined the Jacob Pfautz family at Perkiomen in Montgomery Co, PA.. Apparently he was close in age to Jacob Pfautz' son Michael and they became lifelong friends. Their relationship has not been determined. Theobald, (DeWalt/David) followed the family to Rowan Co NC and Feb 17,1763 obtained a deed for 292 Acres on the Uwharrie River. Deed Book 5. Mary Cassel Case

The listing that I had was with out the dates and mine were all there later. If anyone would like me to look up for a surname just let me know. Nora

Any ingo on > this family would be great. Ann, I am wondering if David Pfautz/Fautz could be the son of Hans Michel Pfautz who arrived in Phila. in 1727 on the William and Sarah. I say that because there is no other Pfautz on the ship lists early enough to be your David. In the York County Births book by Humphreys I find Dewald Fautz and wife (not given) having a child bapt. at St. Mathews Lutheran Church in Hanover, who was born 11 May 1744 (Joh. Daniel). Another entry from the same church for a birth on 11 June 1747, a child Johannes--son of Michael and wife (not given). I would guess they might both be sons of the older Michael. Joan
