    1. [PENNA-DUTCH-L] New Features on the GenConnect Boards
    2. If you haven't visited the GenConnect boards lately, you should go and see the latest additions! The New Features are: 1) Continuous preview/edit - Now the visitor can preview, then edit then preview again, then edit, and on and on ad infinitum until you get your message the way you want it. This means you can preview your message before it is finally placed on the board and rework it until you get it right without posting it until you are *sure* it says exactly what you intended it to say. This should eliminate many an "oops" after a message if posted to the boards! 2) NEW Searchbar! Located on the main screen for every board, this searchbar allows you to set many options that were previously only available by visiting the Search/Personalize Your Display Screen. The searchbar allows you to search for keywords or phrases, to set the number of messages displayed on the main screen, and also to determine in what order they're displayed. The [Search/Personalize Your Display] screen is still available for advanced searching .... like searching by poster. This is one of the greatest improvements I have seen in our boards to date!! I love this!! You were always able to change the display to suit your own preferences but it was far more complicated, and not nearly as "user-friendly." Give it a try! 3) New Notification format. Now the automated notifications that the visitors can sign up for clearly identify where to go to read the message, where to go to subscribe or unsubscribe from the notification list, and also now show the surnames that are entered on the message. You asked for it!!! You wanted the surnames included in the notification messages--and now you have it. You also asked that the link on the notices lead to the top of the board and not to the subscribe box. Now you can have it either way. Enjoy!!! Joan

    1. [PENNA-DUTCH-L] Dillard Family
    2. Does anyone have access to information of James and Fannie Dillard(Dilyard-Dillyard) born in Northampton Co? I found them in the Pa census of 1850 with 4 children. They are listed in the area with several other Dillards that might have been siblings of James. Also list one older male, that might have been his father. I am at a loss to find their parents and siblings for sure. Theda-Ohio

    3. Hi! I use a Mac and even FTM files from others cannot be directly imported by my FTM. What I need is a GEDCOM file. All I do is open (or convert on my Mac) into my WP (Clarisworks). Then I "save as" a plain text file. This is what I now can "import" as a gedcom into FTM. In FTM as you are importing there are buttons on your window which you can scroll to choose the type of file you are importing. (I'm hoping this is the same in a PC FTM version! <G>) Choose "gedcom" and you should be in business!! It's the same on exporting FTM files - scroll the button & choose "gedcom". Some questions will be asked on both as far as what fields you'd like to import/export and then it will convert it for you. BTW - I have recently purchased Reunion for the Mac as my main gene program. It's *fabulous* and is a "native" Mac program. I was really disgusted with Broderbund for sucking me in to purchase the Mac version of FTM and them having almost zero support for it. It has never been upgraded in almost a year and a half!! Can't import images or even fully utilize an FTM web page at their site, since the Mac version does not support those features. One note of mention when importing gedcoms from anyone: no program is *exactly* the same. The additional fields which may be included just may not fit in to the same fields in your program or they may be too long and are cropped. Always go back & double-check to make sure your have the right information in the correct fields. Hope this helps a bit! -Linnea At 16:51 6/30/99, L.A.McGinnis wrote: > Sure would like to know this as well - > > I think it must depend on the software and / or the >computer and / or the setup of these - because I can't do it either even >though everything says this is possible - but I'm NOT a computer whiz - > > > > >> >> I really feel stupid here, but how do you export an FTM file to a gedcom >> file? >> > > join the club - I have some GEDcom files which have been >sent to me, but I can't figure out how to access them even though my FTW >program supposedly does this; I think something is defective, but no one >will admit this - they just agree it's a befuddling problem - > :) :) :) > >anne-ology >[email protected] >http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/8739/index.html

    2. Sandy
    3. Could I get a Census Look-up for James Carson and Sarah Edminston. They were in PA (don't have city) in 1855 as my great grandfather was born then. So would the next census be 1860? This would really help as I am stuck with out the name of the town they lived in. Any other suggestions appreciated. Thanks, Sandy P Eugene, OR

Is there a way to "export"/"import" (without losing everything)??? > Doneva Shepard in Oregon > Try doing a GEDCOM export from FTM and then importing into PAF 4. Also just another bit of knowledge. PAF 4 is the stripped down version of Ancestral Quest 3.0. You can get some support by joining the Ancestral Quest support group. This can be done at: http://www.onelist.com. Ancestral Quest's website is at: http://www.ancestralquest.com/ The code for PAF 4 is frozen while the code for Ancestral Quest 3.0 (AQ 3.0) adds features every couple of weeks. It might worth the investment in AQ 3.0 if you like it. Their support is phenominal!!! Thanks! Don

    1. Re: [PENNA-DUTCH-L] Lookup on OWEN
    2. Thank you, Joan: Yes, I know about working back one generation at a time; been at this 17 years and we've gone back more generations than that in Germany,m in my wife's families. But it hasn't worked for the OWen line so far; that's why I was hoping you'dhave info. That you don't is not your fault, but I was hoping :-) So far, the Lancaster Co. records have not yielded any help on "getting back", (see above). I DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THAT FTM VOL.; COULD YOU FWD. YOUR INFO TO ME?? Thanks for your suggestions on the books to seek out at the library. I'll do that before we go on our trip. Always looking for the "easier" way out, I had hoped that you'd have some "leads." Again, that you don't is not your fault!! I'm just going to have to dig into the hard-core research and see if I can get the leads that answer my questions. Lancaster Co. is a bearcat!! At least for my line!! Thanks again for your help and suggestions. Dave Ross Denver, CO
