Hello Heather, Re DORINDA PENFOLD and the 1851 census for West Chiltington,I can only think that it is a case either of bad hanndwriting by the enumerator or his writing has faded with age and the last digit of her age looks like an O on the photocopy rather than a 9 as it should be. As far as the 1841 census is concerned ages were rounded down to the nearest five years so Dorinda would have been aged between 45 and 49 which would give a date of birth between 1792 and 1796. With regard to BARTON PENFOLD I agree with yuor findings that the 1851 census is about right and that he was born in 1802. Turning now to the 1841 census,as with Dorinda,Bartons age has been rounded down to 35 whereas he was older probably 39 which would agree with the details you hold. I haven't been able to establish the relationship,if any, of Peter Penfold (44) Sarah (42) and Jane(15) to any particular line of Penfold's. Peter who according to the 1851 census was born in Surrey could have returned to his "roots" or drifted into West Chiltington. The same applies to Oliver. You mention James Greenfield in your note. There are three James Greenfield's shown in the 1851 census for West Chiltington ages 49,22 and 14. none seem to fit in with the Jame christened in 1817. There is also a James at Storrington age 4. The only connection Greenfield/Penfold I can find goes back to 1585 when a Thomas Greenfield married Jeanne Penfold by licence at Chichester on 23 July. Thomas was of Billingshurst,Sussex Although my Penfolds lived in or around Pulborough for many years I haven't,as yet been able to find any connection with the Barton Penfold line . Will keep you posted. Best wishes Stan Clark of Ifield.
Hi Stan, sorry I have taken so long to reply to your email.... I have been sorting through and entering into my computer data from some working papers from a now deceased PENFOLD, A long job. Now completed but there are so many differences in my own data and this data.... My next job is to compare and seek out the truth between the difference.... what a job. I don't have any records of a PETER, Sarah and Jane as being born in Surrey and ... not being one to think that it could be just a coincidence that they showed up in Pullborough ( going on the fact that traveling distances could not have been easy and would have been costly) I tend to think that there has to be a family reason for them to have been there.... so... who are they related to? No doubt time will tell I have copies of documents from West Chiltington Charity (relating to the Smythe Trust) that show Michael Greenfield (uncle of James) as serving as chairman on a committee with Barton Penfold in 1862 Barton P. Michael Greenfield and his brother James Greenfield were all trustees. (brothers of Dorinda) Also a copy of Vestry minutes (1870) that Mr. Thomas Greenfield be appointed as Surveyor of the Highway. Barton and Michael also on this Doc. as churchwardens Father of Dorinda, Michael, James and Thomas is William Greenfield. The only reference I have to James Greenfield son of Dorinda is as follows..... In 1824 Barton mar. Dorinda Greenfield born 1792 at Storrington, Daughter of William Greenfield, the founder of Greenfield's of Storrington Ltd. In 1817 she had a barsted son bapt at St Mary's Church Storrington (on ChristmasDay) he was christened James Greenfield, the father unknown. Dorinda died in the Thakeham Union Poor House at the age of 92 in 1884. I have not been able to view the Baptismal records at St Mary's so cant say categorically that the above information has been proven by me. All this information I have received from my cousin Hugh Penfold of Bogna Regis. Stan, I recall that you sent me details of your connections with Pullborough but last year I had computer problems like you wouldn't believe and lost a good bit of data. I would appreciate if you could send me an outline again. Who ;knows... something might click when I am going through my many bits of paper. (who said a house was to live in... for us here it is a place to keep my research bits and pieces in) Hope I haven't confused you to ;much.
