Thanks Everyone for the site with access to the 1881 census. Yes, have been knocking myself out looking up different names. Q: In the 1901 census my great - grandmother is listed as a widow, name Eliza Penfold, age 31. In the 1881 census, there is a Eliza Penfold, born 1871. I had thought Penfold would be her married name, but was it common then to revert back to your maiden name when becoming a widow?? I ended up with 5 girls who fit the bill, but was very surprised to come up with a Penfold as one of them. The other girls who fit are surnamed: Welfare, Bourne, Phillips and Pope. All born Rye, Sussex 1870 - 1871. Her daughter, my grandmother Rose, was born 9th March 1890. Eliza would have been 19 then, so I'm assuming she married before Rose was born. Have no idea of husbands name, she just lists herself as a widow in 1901. Any suggestions on how I find out which Eliza is mine? Leigh
