Carole, Thanks so much for the reply. You found the right Thomas Penfold with the birth of 12-22-1817 and death of 5-27-1888 but he died and is buried in Massillon Iowa and would not be in England's 1880 census. I think he came to the U.S. around 1830ish. Could possible be part of the Petworth project. I have thought at times that he was orphaned at a young age. He and a brother William were living in Buffalo NY in 1844 and were listed a sailors. Another distant relative thinks Thomas George came from a family with nine boys of which some came to the U.S. and some went to Australia, but where are their parents? Please keep me in mind.
