A Happy New Year to you all! My name is Malcolm Hupman and I live at Corby, Northants, England. My great-grandmother was Sarah Ann Penfold who was born at Bedhampton, Hampshire in 1855 not long after her father George Penfold moved there from Chichester, Sussex. George was the son of George Penfold and Elizabeth Edwards. A George and Bet Penfold had a son George christened at Stouton, Sussex on 15 December 1811 but further research is needed to confirm this is the correct christening. We know that they were living in Chichester, Sussex in 1818 and George jnr. gave Chichester as his place of birth in all the census returns from 1841 to 1891. His age is inconstant in the census returns and having analysed the results have concluded that he lied about his age when he moved to Bedhampton, Hampshire between 1851 and 1855 and maintained the lie until he finished work between 1881 and 1891 and for this reason I believe the 1851 and 1891 returns to be the most reliable indication of his birth and would expect him to have been born in 1810 give or take a year. He married Eleanor Lipscomb in 1836 at Saint Peter the Great, Chichester, Sussex. She was the daughter of Joseph Lipscomb and Elizabeth Gratwick. There is some evidence that would indicate that George Penfold snr could be the son of Richard Penfold and Sarah Humphrey married at Aldingborne, Sussex and the grandson of Edward Penfold and Catherine Constable married at Chichester in 1754. Both Edward and Catherine were shown as of Arundel.
