Grinstead where he believes, his father was a settled parishioner and that, last Lady Day six years agone, he hired himself to William GRATWICKE of W. Grinstead, farmer for one year and performed the whole year's service, and has nto since done any act to gain a settlement in any other parish. (Mark of R.P.) Henfield Settlement Examinations: 1796 Jan 23 - William CHURCHER of Henfield, labourer, said that, at Michaelmas 1794, he hired himself to Mr. RICHARD PENFOLD, of Steyning, to serve him for a year at wages of nine guineas and served him in Steyning and Wiston the whole year and that, the last night of his service, he slept in Steyning, and in the mo rning, returned with his master's cattle to Buddington in the parish of Wiston and then returned to his master at Steyning, who paid him his wages. That Mr. Penfold was rated and occupied a house in Steyning and paid the poor rates for the same. That he has done no act whereby to gain a settlement since, and has a wife named Mary (Mark of W.C.) Bolney Bastardy Orders 1826 Apr 28 - Ann KING, singlewoman, has declared that THOMAS PENFOLD of Hurstpierpoint, labourer, is the father of a female bastard child born of her on 25 March, at her father's house in Bolney. T.P. to pay 2pounds 7 s 6 d expenses at birth, 1 pound 2 s. 0d cost of apprehending him and 2s 6d a week, the mother to pay 6d a week. Hurstpierpoint Apprenticeship Agreements. 1809 Nov 20 - John PACKHAM STONER otherwise PACKHAM age 18 years, apprenticed to Thomas PENNIFOLD of Clayton, weaver, until age of 21 years ; trade of weaver. Consideration 30 pounds to be paid by the parish officers, 15 pounds forthwith and 15 pounds on 20th Mary 1811 (signatures of J.P.S. otherwise P. and T.P.) Worth Settlement Examinations 1769 Dec 29 - Richard BILCLIFFE, now residing in the Foreign of Reigate, Surrey, said that he was born in Burstow, Surrey, and that, about 10 years ago, he was hired by THOMAS PENFOLD, of Tinsley, Worth, for a year at wages of 6 pounds, that he served the year and received his wages and, afterwards, lived a year with Thomas FENNER of Horley, Surrey, under two hirings for half a year, and has not gained a settlement since. Hi All, Does anyone have any information about Eliza Penfold, born 1870/1871 in Sussex Rye. Don't know her maiden name as yet, listed in the 1901 census as a widow with 2 children - Rose and Bertie. Address at time of census was 24 Winter Road Eastborne. Thanks, Leigh (Dry dusty Australia)
