My Grandparents: Rose Mary PENFOLD was born on 31 May 1904, married to Alfred James HANCOCK on 9 Jan 1927 in St Saviour's Parish Church, Battersea Park. Has anyone anything on William Penfold, Mariner born about 1891 or earlier ? NB William appears in the same area of London as Oliver Penfold, chemist born Sussex who was of the Hugh Penfold/ Mary Marchant line, Angmering I think. Oliver had a son, Marchant Penfold who was also a Master Mariner.

Yes, I admit to a typo - 1870 for the birth year of Thomas in Ifield. He later married a Jane Sageman of Rusper. On the 1881 census you will see him with Parents James b. 1830 and Jane b.1842. I have spoken with his grandson who has confirmed this. 1901 finds Thomas and his first wife in Westcott, Dorking. I am interested in any information on this family. His father was Walter Penfold married to Harriet. Walter had a brother Alfred Edward Penfold who emigrated to New Zealand. according to the 1901 census the family were living at 20 Emu Rd, Greenwich, London. We are now trying to track Walter down to see if he had any children and what happened to them. Be grateful for any information. Thanks Creina Penfold

Hi Jo I have just been checking out the Wisborough Green and Kirdford Penfolds. I agree William and Elizabeth (Strudwick) are likely to be her parents but like you no proof yet. If they are, the following may help prove family links. Two other Penfolds with Wisborough Green links married Strudwicks:- Susannah married James Strudwick in Jun 1796 at Kirdford - she hada had an illegitimate son earlier that year at Wisb. Geen. 5 of their legitimate children were also born there. David Penfold marriedAnn Strudwick at Wisb. Green 1799 and had one daughter Hannah there plus two at Kirdford - Lucy 1799 and David 1822 (possibly in Worplesdon, SRY between these dates). Have as yet found no trace of William and Elizabeth in Kirdford. Going out on a limb, I have been looking at the possibility od William, David and Susannah being the children of William and Ann (King) of Kirdford - I think this William could be the son of William and (Lucy) [again only speculation so far]. However William and Lucy look likely ancestoes as both William and David had Lucy's which is not that common and David and William are also family names in that branch and David is not at all common at that time. - Hope these ramblings help point you in the right direction. I so far have no links to this branch but am interested in all Penfolds. I would like help on one thing though, bit of a cheek on a Penfold group (sorry Trevor), but do you know whether William and Elizabeth Tickner had a neice Mary Tickner? She was my Mum's ancestor and on the 1851 Census says she was born Pulborough 1808/1809. I could not find her at Pulborough on the IGI nor at Billingshurst where I have found a number of Pulborough born people baptised - I did find a few Tickner marriages at Billingshurt- Henry to Elizabeth Barret 1808, John to Sarah Ireland 1793 plus the baptism of James(1814)son of William and Elizabeth. I had been hoping Mary might be James' sister, but William and Elizabeth obviously married too late for that (unless she was his half sister). Hope you can shed some light.
