Hi Brian, Hope you had a good Christmas. Here the snow came through in the end, so we had a white but blowy Christmas. I double checked the information I had on my grandfather, Eli James Penfold, and found he was born in Dragon's Green in 1908. He died in 1961. He married my grandmother, Edith Francis, in Itchingfield in about 1937 I think. Would you have anything on him? Thanks again, Terry Penfold On Wed, 25 Dec 2002, "brian bloomfield" wrote: > > Hi, Terry, > The only ELI PENFOLD I have ref to was b 1841, d 1851 > Ifield - there may be > a later connection with your ELI JAMES if you can track > back a bit more (as > the location and forename are the same) > Merry Christmas > Brian of Sussex > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <terryrobert@canada.com> > To: <PENFOLD-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Tuesday, December 24, 2002 2:22 PM > Subject: Unidentified subject! > > > > Hello everyone, > > > > My name is Terry Penfold and I am currently living in > > Ottawa. My name is Joy Hurst and I live in Sidcup, Kent. I am researching the Penfolds of the Hawkhurst and Cranbrook area. My line goes back from my great-grandmother Charlotte Penfold born 1859 Cranbrook. Her parents were James Penfold b.1830 Hawkhurst and Maria Funnell and the parents of James were James Penfold b. 1806 Hawkhurst and Margaret Christmas. The line then goes back to John Penfold & Mary Gooding married 10 Dec 1804 Hawkhurst. >From the age given at his death John would appear to have been born about 1768 but as he died in 1835 I have no way at the moment of knowing which county he was born in. I have been lucky in tracing relatives in America so know that James b. 1806 and three sons and very possibly a daughter all migrated there. Also I have made contact with members of this list who are descended from James Isaac the brother of my great-grandmother and his son Frederick William. Now I would like to try and trace descendants of his other sons Alfred Oliver Augustus b. 1878 and James Isaac b. 1881 both in Staplehurst. Hoping you all had a wonderful Christmas and wishing you all a healthy and happy New Year. Joy
I'm Linda Irwin from North Somerset. The PENFOLDs aren't in my direct line, but I'm researching the family of George PENFOLD b.1895 Petworth, Sussex who married Edith Alice BUDD b.1899 Fittleworth, Sussex - Edith was my grandmother's sister. George's family goes back to Thomas PENNIFOLD b.1675 Crawley who married Jane HOGGE in Ifield in 1699. The family spread through Worth and Warbleton with George's line settling in Petworth around 1810. Each generation included at least one male with the forename of Standing, a tradition which continues today. The family includes two brothers who were both Workhouse Masters - John Standing PENFOLD who was Master of Petworth Workhouse in 1840, and William PENFOLD, Master of Easebourne (Midhurst) Workhouse before 1832. William was also the superintendent aboard the Lord Melville which carried emigrants to Canada as part of the Petworth Emigration Scheme. I believe his family remained in Canada as his son Standing George PENFOLD married in Lockport City in 1846. John Standing PENFOLD's son Bryan was a warder at the prison in Gillingham, Kent in 1881, and his nephew Standing Joseph PENFOLD (my George PENFOLD's grandfather) was a Trade Instructor at Portsmouth Prison for many years. I'm happy to share any information, and I'm always on the lookout for more connections :) Linda North Somerset, England linda@lindanet.co.uk Family tree at: http://www.lindanet.co.uk

Hi, everyone, My name is Jack Cholette and I live in Rochester, New York, which is about 300 miles northwest of New York City. My Penfold connection is through my great-grandmother Jane Penfold who married John Palmer in 1880 in Brockham, Surrey. With the help of Kate Penfold Burns, we have pieced together these relations for this part of the family, most of whom lived in Walton-on-the-Hill, Surrey: Jane Penfold was the daughter of William Penfold and Mary Letts. (William's parents were Elijah Penfold and Sophia Knight.) William had previously been married to Mary's sister, Ann Letts, before she died in 1856. Interestingly, that couple's granddaughter, Alice Venn (child of Elizabeth Ann Penfold and Edwin Venn) married John Palmer after his first wife, Jane Penfold, died in 1912. I would be most interested in exchanging information with anyone who can add to this branch of the family.
> a) your name(s) Ben Beck > b) where you are located London > c) a brief overview of who you are researching (looking for) My descent is from Elizabeth Penfold, of Warnham & Slinfold, Sussex, who married Richard Boarn or Bourn in Horsham, Sussex, in 1781. She was christened in Slinfold in 1756, daughter of Henry Penfold, who married Elizabeth Furlonger at Wisborough Green in 1754. Would be glad of any information on these people and earlier generations. Also to hear from any other descendants of this family. A Happy New Year to you all! My name is Malcolm Hupman and I live at Corby, Northants, England. My great-grandmother was Sarah Ann Penfold who was born at Bedhampton, Hampshire in 1855 not long after her father George Penfold moved there from Chichester, Sussex. George was the son of George Penfold and Elizabeth Edwards. A George and Bet Penfold had a son George christened at Stouton, Sussex on 15 December 1811 but further research is needed to confirm this is the correct christening. We know that they were living in Chichester, Sussex in 1818 and George jnr. gave Chichester as his place of birth in all the census returns from 1841 to 1891. His age is inconstant in the census returns and having analysed the results have concluded that he lied about his age when he moved to Bedhampton, Hampshire between 1851 and 1855 and maintained the lie until he finished work between 1881 and 1891 and for this reason I believe the 1851 and 1891 returns to be the most reliable indication of his birth and would expect him to have been born in 1810 give or take a year. He married Eleanor Lipscomb in 1836 at Saint Peter the Great, Chichester, Sussex. She was the daughter of Joseph Lipscomb and Elizabeth Gratwick. There is some evidence that would indicate that George Penfold snr could be the son of Richard Penfold and Sarah Humphrey married at Aldingborne, Sussex and the grandson of Edward Penfold and Catherine Constable married at Chichester in 1754. Both Edward and Catherine were shown as of Arundel. There are more details about George jnr. on my website at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/malcolm.hupman/index_files/page0009.htm E-mail Malcolm.Hupman@ntlworld.com Outgoing mail scanned by Norton Antivirus 2003 Professional Edition

Greetings to all and best wishes for a peaceful 2003 I am Bruce Penfold I am at Christchurch, New Zealand where I and my father were born. My greatgrandfather Thomas emigrated from Ightham, Kent in 1878 with wife Elizabeth, 4 daughters and one son, Frank, my grandfather. I'm researching generally descendants of Richard Penfold(Penvill) (b Cranbrook 1724) and Mary Buss (greatgrandparents of Thomas above) who lived in the Goudhurst/Horsemonden/Cranbrook area. Thomas's father William (Goudhurst 1791) built the Bricklayers Arms in Goudhurst in the 1830's and this building remains today in restored condition. In particular I'm wanting information on descendants of Thomas's siblings - William (Horsemonden 1813 m Louisa & sons William 1858, Arthur 1860, Walter 1868, Frederick 1871 who all moved to London). James (Horsemonden 1816 m Agnes Smith then Elizabeth Bulpit - he died Shoreditch 1868 - & sons William 1841, Colville 1845, Robert 1848 & James 1851 also to London). David (Goudhurst 1820 & son Harry 1855 m Amelia Berwick). Emily (Goudhurst 1829 m Charles Humphrey & sons William 1858 & George 1863), Charles taking over the Bricklayers Arms in Goudhurst. Here's hoping! Bruce Penfold

Hi Listers, a) Peter Gainsborough b) Croydon, Surrey - about three miles from Trevor!! c) Seeking present-day descendants of Henry George Penfold born 17 February, 1876 at Wickham's Row, Goudhurst, Kent, one of the children of George Penfold and Emma nee Hawkins, who married on 28 March, 1905 at the Congregational Church, East Hill, Wandsworth, London, to Caroline Ann Mellows, born 24 August, 1878 at 46, Rockingham Street, Newington, London, one of the children of William Mellows and Eleanor nee West.
