Thanks Everyone for the site with access to the 1881 census. Yes, have been knocking myself out looking up different names. Q: In the 1901 census my great - grandmother is listed as a widow, name Eliza Penfold, age 31. In the 1881 census, there is a Eliza Penfold, born 1871. I had thought Penfold would be her married name, but was it common then to revert back to your maiden name when becoming a widow?? I ended up with 5 girls who fit the bill, but was very surprised to come up with a Penfold as one of them. The other girls who fit are surnamed: Welfare, Bourne, Phillips and Pope. All born Rye, Sussex 1870 - 1871. Her daughter, my grandmother Rose, was born 9th March 1890. Eliza would have been 19 then, so I'm assuming she married before Rose was born. Have no idea of husbands name, she just lists herself as a widow in 1901. Any suggestions on how I find out which Eliza is mine? Leigh

Hi Everyone, Is there anyway to access the 1881 census online? I'm in Australia, and finding it hard to get further in my inquiries. Access to the 1881 census would help fill in a couple of gaps. Thanks Leigh
Hi, I am Alison Byrne from a small village near Leamington Spa, Warwickshire (originally from Sussex though!) I am a descendent of Thomas Penfold and Ann Dudley, his second wife (married 28/9/1761 in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex), and then through their son John Penfold and Ann Ridley Jarrat (m.1786 Balcombe, East Sussex), grandson, Stephen Penfold and Elizabeth Heasman (m. 1821 Slaugham, East Sussex) , g. grandson Berrick Penfold and Amelia Burt (m.1862 Horley West Sussex) , and g.g. granddaughter Mary Ann Penfold and Enoch Best (my g.g.grandparents) (m. 1884 Nutley, East Sussex). Some of Berricks brothers emigrated to Canada and I have contact with a cousin in Toronto. I am also aware of cousins in Australia who descend from Thomas Penfold and his first wife Ann White who married in 1748. Happy New Year to you all Alison

Hello Trevor and all members of the Penfold list. My name is Bob Roberts and I live in Grants Pass, Oregon-USA My research interest are: (1) Penfold and Tribe ancestors in West Sussex, namely around the Lurgashall area. My 2x great-grandparents were Jesse Penfold and Jane Tribe Penfold. They were involved with the Petworth Emigration Scheme and sailed on the Lord Wellington for Canada in 1832. My great-grandmother, Esther Penfold, was born aboard the ship the day it reached Quebec, Canada. (2) Roberts in Wales, My great grandfather Owen Roberts was born in Aber, Caernarfonshire, Wales. Owen emigrated to Canada in 1843 where he met and married Esther Penfold. They had 13 children born to them and the family migrated to Kansas, USA in 1870. One other child was born in Kansas. Some on the list may know about the two books that have been published about the Petworth Emigrants. Here are the titles: "Assisting Emigration to Upper Canada-The Petworth Project 1832-1837", by Wendy Cameron and Mary McDougall Maude. And: "English Immigrant Voices-Labourers' Letters from Upper Canada in the 1830's", edited by Wendy Cameron, Sheila Haines and Mary McDougall Maude. I have the two volumes plus one written by author John Connon entitled "Elora", it is the early history of Elora and vicinity. This is the area where many of the immigrants settled and many of their lives are described within the book. If any one on the Penfold list has surname interests in the Petworth Scheme I will be happy to share what is in the books. May everyone enjoy a happy and prosperous New Year. Bob Roberts Oregon, USA

Hi! I'm researching the same Penfolds as Trevor that go back to William Penfold and Hannah Humphrey. However, my grandmother Louisa Penfold married my grandfather Joseph Percy Pennifold (Rowland). Joseph Percy was one of 2 sons of Jane Rowland and his father was Joseph Pennifold born in Clayton, Sussex. I would be interested in any information on any of the PENNIFOLDS and I have quite a lot of info. that I could share if anyone is interested in the Pennifolds. Happy New Year to everyone! Louisa Rowland
Hello everyone, Does anyone have any information on Henry Penfold (born 1849 or 1850, probably in Horsham)? In the 1901 census he is listed as being head of household at 9 Victory Road, Horsham. Occupation: sugar boiler. I am fairly certain he is my great-great grandfather and am trying to trace further back. Thanks and Happy New Year to everyone!
