    3. Thanks Arlene - progress (backwards) at last! Charles (my Grandfather) gives his age as 43 in the 1901 census but I don't count on the accuracy of that. His wife Alice had the same age. She was from Burgess Hill, and their first 3 children were born there, then they moved to Hove, near Brighton, where the rest were born. I have a cousin aged 93 who still remembers them! Yes please, I would like more information of his ancestry, the large families of those days means the family is spread across the globe - one of my uncles emigrated to Canada in the '20s, and it is quite likely that members of earlier generations left these shores also. Thanks for your comment. Lloyd.

As he did so ,different sons decided to settle in different towns. I traced my G Grandfather William in the 1881 Census to a caravan in Bere Regis. He was a Hawker/Traveller and my Grandfather Henry(also a Hawker) was with him in the caravan with other sons and daughters.William married Priscilla Thompson in Portsmouth in Portsmouth in 1854 and their fathers were John Penfold and Amos Thompson. Does any of this fit in with your line of Penfolds? Look forward to hearing from you Tony
