    3. There is a Dorinda May PENFOLD married to Henry BONE of Hayling South, Hants. on the PR for Angmering. However, it states that she was "of this Parish" but the rather unusual name might suggest a connection to her from Storrington. 3. Hi Listers, I'm new to the list and thought I'd see if there is anyone with similar interests. I'm also new to researching family history so any advice would be much appreciated. Here goes the story.... William Henry Leary (my husbands grandfather) decided that his father did something to make him change his name to Penfold (his mothers maiden name) in 1936. He was aged approx.18yrs. None of the family seem to want to elaborate any further and the DOB they gave me I can't seem to find in the IGI. I don't know where he was born and he died c1986, however I do know his father was called William Leary and his mother Francis Isabelle Penfold. Any takers?? Lynda

    3. Hullo, I am new to this group. 1. MY INTEREST:- I had PENFOLD people in my family tree until 1841. One of them is John PENFOLD a wheelwright. John was married in Brighton, Sussex, England in Aug 1819. I live in BRIGHTON now. I should be interested to hear from anyone with links to this John. 2. To Ron PENFOLD in North Dakota:- Regarding your query about Thomas PENFOLD born Dec 1817, in Sussex and his brother William. There are many PENFOLD families in a lot of Sussex parishes around this time, so any clues would help. a. Have you looked in the American census returns, to see if a parish in Sussex is mentioned as his birthplace in any of them? b. Could you list the names of his and his brother's children, just in case they link with Sussex names, please? Regards Ken

    3. Hi Julie and Telford, Not my correspondence I know...But if you ever go looking for Frances nee Oxall noted below, you might well find that she was nee Boxall, which is a very popular name in that area even now - Oxall I have never come across, but Haslemere, a few miles from Lurgashall, was - is - full of Boxalls and Boxells. There is a Boxalland Farm at Lurgashall - not sure what came first, the place or the name. Good luck anyway, Rebecca Kenneison. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Julie Martin" <julie@housemartin.f9.co.uk> To: <PENFOLD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 14, 2003 7:37 PM Subject: Re: [Penfold] Hope it helps! > Hi Telford > > I have found the following that might help > > Record of marriage on IGI for Jesse Penfold and Jane Tribe 2 Dec 1817 - > it is an individual entry not a parish entry, however, so would need > checking > > Jesse is probably the Jesse son of Jesse and Frances (ne Oxall) bap. > Lurgashall 1781. 3. Hi Telford I have found the following that might help Record of marriage on IGI for Jesse Penfold and Jane Tribe 2 Dec 1817 - it is an individual entry not a parish entry, however, so would need checking Jesse is probably the Jesse son of Jesse and Frances (ne Oxall) bap. Lurgashall 1781. Jesse and Frances married in 1778 at Lurgashall - children Frances 1779, Jesse 1781, Ann 1783 there is then a gap (children prob. bap. elsewhere before Elisha 1790, Sarah 1793, Susannah 1795, thomas 1799. As Jesse and Elisha/Elijah are quite rare names, it is likely that Jesse snr is the son of William and Lucy (nee Child) bap. 1758 Kirdford. This also links to Kate's Penfolds Elijah & co. in Banstead and also very probably to the descendants of James & Jemima of Newdigate and Crawley. William and Lucy's sons James and Elijah moved to Newdigate and Horley and had descendants there. Hope these thoughts and info prove fruitful Best wishes Julie telford Penfold wrote: > > Jesse penfold and jane tribe left Lurgashall with the petworth migrants but > i don't know if they were from there originally or not. > > Telford Penfold B.A. B.Th. Hi All, >From another list If you type in PENFOLD there is among the list a photo of a number of PENFOLD's -also one is identified as being from Sussex Louise "Australian War Museum site, www.awm.gov.au, has digitized the Red Cross Missing and Enquiries files". When I spot a link of interest I usually go check for the Boniface surname and a few others. This provide some interesting results. A picture of a George Boniface's naval jacket and a group naval photo that includes a John Boniface, Leading Stoker from St. Lukes, London, England. Would be interesting to know who they belong to. The path to the above info: www.awm.gov.au / Collection Databases / Collections Search / then put boniface in search box. ==== BONIFACE Mailing List ==== Tell other BONIFACE researchers about our list to help it grow. 3. Carole, Thanks so much for the reply. You found the right Thomas Penfold with the birth of 12-22-1817 and death of 5-27-1888 but he died and is buried in Massillon Iowa and would not be in England's 1880 census. I think he came to the U.S. around 1830ish. Could possible be part of the Petworth project. I have thought at times that he was orphaned at a young age. He and a brother William were living in Buffalo NY in 1844 and were listed a sailors. Another distant relative thinks Thomas George came from a family with nine boys of which some came to the U.S. and some went to Australia, but where are their parents? Please keep me in mind. 3. Hi Ron! How do you know his birth date and not where? Does itjust give Sussex as place of birth? Did you find it on a Census? Maybe look on another one and it will give the place. I will look in my records, but if you have no idea where in Sussex,it would be hard to find. I have researched a lot of places in Sussex, but some parishes were not for Penfolds, I am also researching Rowland, Pennifold, and scads of others. I will look through my records to see if I can find one born 1817. 3. Louisa, My name is Ron Penfold and a member of the Penfold Rootsweb. I saw your offer to research some of the Parish Registers and decided to take you up on the offer. The person I need information on is my GGGrandfather Thomas George Penfold. He was born on 22 December 1817. The only other information I have about him is that the location was Sussex. I live in North Dakota, USA, and do not know much about Sussex or how many Parishes are involved. I think there are many and I understand your reluctance if there is too much work involved. I downloaded several Transcriptions that Trevor and Eileen Penfold, and Kate Burns had and they are Alford, Sullington, Itchingfield and Broadwater. I have lots of information on him after he came to the USA but not before. He was suppose to have been a Cabin boy at age 12 (1829), married my GGGrandmother (Elizabeth Parry) in 1844, sailed the Great Lakes until 1850 and then became a farmer. We think the ship he sailed on was the Brig Economy. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. 2. Ed McCarthy
    3. Hello. I am Ed McCarthy. I spend about half of my time in Buxton, Maine, and the other half in the Washington DC area. That is when I am not travelling somewhere else, which is often enough. In any case, the laptop goes along. "My" Penfolds came from West Sussex, specifically the Pulborough-West Chiltington area. They are ancillary to my primary English interest, in that Barton Penfold (1835-1903), a farmer of West Chiltington, married Harriet Chatfield, my gran's aunt, in 1860. They had two children, Hugh, born about 1875, and Peter (tho I am not sure of the name) born about 1880. Peter's son, Peter W., was living in Bognor Regis last I knew of him. I need to do some leg work to flesh out these Penfolds, but any related info would be appreciated.
