Newington rang a bell and I remembered a website (http://www.dswark.org) i had looked at before. Not sure if it is of any use, or the correct one but..... FYI: The Parish Church of Saint Mary Newington 57 Kennington Park Road Kennington London SE11 4JQ 020 7735 1894 Until 1870's the church was located at the Elephant and Castle roundabout when it, and several others were relocated due to road changes in the area. In the 1950's the area was affected by bomb damage so perhaps the street disappeared then. Visitors to this site may include those in search of Family History records. Please note that historical records and registers of baptisms, marriages and burials etc are not held in the parish. They are in the care of: The London Metropolitan Archives 40 Northampton Road London EC1R 0HB Tel:(+44) 020 7332 3820 (Reception) (+44) 020 7332 3822 (Parish records) Fax:(+44) 020 7833 9136 Email: London Metropolitan Archives ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Chris Penfold" <chris.penfold@ntlworld.com> Reply-To: PENFOLD-L@rootsweb.com To: PENFOLD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Penfold] William George Penfold Date: Thu, 27 Feb 2003 17:53:38 -0000 Hello Viki, William George Penfold is my Great Grand Father, William George Benjamin my Grand Father and his son Harry John my Dad. I have done a bit of research over the last few years and have found a few birth and marriage certificates which confirm dates and addresses etc. William George was born 26/5/1861 and his father was also William George (an original lot us Penfolds). His mother was Elen Reading and they were married at St. Mary, Lambeth on 29/7/1860. William George the elder was born 3/1/1838 in Trinity St Mary, Newington. This is where things get a bit sketchy. William George the elder's Parents were George Penfold & Mary Tildesley and on William's birth certificate he is listed as a Letter carrier for the General Post Office. I have since found his appointment in the Post Office archives (24/5/1835) at Mount Pleasant and some pension details. According to the birth certificate George & Mary were living at 4 Maryland Place, Newington but I have not been able to find this address in old census returns. I believe that George was born around 1808 and I have found an IGI listing for their marriage of 13/4/1828 in 'London'. I hope this is what you are looking for. If you would like other more recent details please let me know. Hi Vikki There is a William G Penfold shown in the 1881 Census. He is aged 43 , a musician & living in Richmond, Surrey with his wife Ellen, aged 42. They had 5 children all shown as being born in Richmond. The children were Harry (17), Alfred (13) Ellen (11), Mary (5) and Thomas (3). Although his wife's name isn't Annie, it is strange that the children were all born in Richmond. I've done aname search of the 1901 Census and I can't find William G or William George Benjamin. I'm fairly new to all this too and am currently tracing my Penfold ancestors back in Sussex. I hope this may be of use.If I find out any more I'll get back to you. HI Carol Thanks for your message. Will keep on looking. FYI:I was looking at a websit for Wingham www.wingham.org.uk which has a PENFOLD Travelling Fair mention in its History page/Flower Show as follows: Extract from The Kent Herald, September 26, 1839 ......The Flower Show took place in the large field on the left hand side of the Canterbury Road, on the far side of the railway embankment. On the day previous to the Show, the Dover Marquee Company would erect the large marquee for the exhibits, smaller marquees for refreshments, and, of course, the Beer Tent. Penfold's Travelling Fair provided entertainment with swings, roundabouts and games of chance.
