    3. Hi David There was a Walter Penfold aged 6 years, born Croyden, in the 1881 Census. He was living at 13 Cross Road, Croyden, with his mother Jane aged 37 (born Godstone, Surrey) and his brother Henry aged 6, born Croydon too. There is no mention of Jane's husband and she is down as the head of the family. There also seems to be more than one Henry Penfold, born Croydon, of a similar age in the 1901 Census. I am still having difficulty placing my William and Mary Penfold, parents of my gg-grandmother Harriet Penfold. I have found a possible William Penfold on the IGI, chr. 07 Feb 1796 at Shoreham, Kent, which is in fairly close proximity to Erith, Dartford, etc. I'll probably focus on him. Not too sure where Phebe Gorringe was from, but the name being uncommon, stuck in my mind. Take care! Bonnie

    3. Hello Julie, I think you are realising what I am saying no-one really 'knows' anything about Eliga (Elijah) b. in Alfold with any certainty - and so all is supposition. We can all believe 'this' or 'that' might be the case - however, it is not good enough to build a past around. 3. Hi John This is not my line but I have been in correspondence with others, including Kate who are descended from that line and a lot of my info has come from them plus other research i have done. I am researching as many of the Surrey/Sussex border branches as i can (mainly 18th and early 19th century as you can see from my website). I believe they are all ultimately connected and am collecting clues to their links. They also appear to have connections to Lewisham and other Kent parishes (I haven't yet connected mine with the Goudhurst/Hawkhurst Penfolds and believe that may be further back in time. My line is presently stuck on Thomas of Ifield born place unknown about 1765. Possibly he is a son of William and Jane of Ifield and there are also inklings of a connection to the Worth Penfolds. 3. Hi Kate Afraid I know nothing beyond Elijah's baptism at Alfold in 1801, which was passed on to me by someone else (sorry can't remember who off the top of my head, but he was descended from Elijah. There was another Elijah bap. 1808 (I think) at Wisborough Green. His parents were also George and Jane but I don't think they would be the same ones. I suspect they were related, however, this may even be the Elijah who was a witness at his second wedding. I am wondering wheter your Elijah may have been the youngest of his generation and George of Wisb. Gr. possibly an older brother. I believe the Mary Penfold who married Richard Standing at Alfold in 1827 may be Elijah's sister (she was sent to Brighton by the parish when pregnant with her illegitimate daughter - Mary Ann bap. Alfold 1826). Have you any clues from Elijah's Brighton connection? Sorry I can't help further Best wishes Julie kburns wrote: > > Hello Julie, > > I was interested to see you where you place Elijah PENFOLD of Banstead > who is one of my relations. 3. Hi John Hope you don't mind my mentioning that Elijah's mother Jen would have been Jane not Jennifer. Jenny (usually pronounced Jinny in England) was a pet form of Jane and and only became used for Jennifer in the 20th century. Incidentally Jennifer was a Cornish name Jenifer (Guinevere - 'of King Arthur fame') and the 'nn' spelling only came in when it was associated with Jenny in the 20th century. 3. Hello Julie, I was interested to see you where you place Elijah PENFOLD of Banstead who is one of my relations. Up until your posting no-one could place or had a 'definite birth' for him and therefore his parents. The only definite thing for Elijah over the years has been the name of his father George. There has always been a query over 'which' George. I would be interested to know more about Elijah' parents - as would others - where did they live, did they have more children - when did they died, and where. Kate

    3. Does anyone have any information please on JAMES PENFOLD born around 1833 in Pulborough? I have found him in the 1881 census living in Kent aged 48. His wife is Sophia & they had three sons, William, Frederick E and Edwin G. I found one record that says his parents were Peter & Sarah, but surely they can't be Peter, b.1777 & Sarah Burrage because that would make Sarah 54 when she had him! Many thanks Marilyn

    3. Hello Heather, Re DORINDA PENFOLD and the 1851 census for West Chiltington,I can only think that it is a case either of bad hanndwriting by the enumerator or his writing has faded with age and the last digit of her age looks like an O on the photocopy rather than a 9 as it should be. As far as the 1841 census is concerned ages were rounded down to the nearest five years so Dorinda would have been aged between 45 and 49 which would give a date of birth between 1792 and 1796. With regard to BARTON PENFOLD I agree with yuor findings that the 1851 census is about right and that he was born in 1802. Turning now to the 1841 census,as with Dorinda,Bartons age has been rounded down to 35 whereas he was older probably 39 which would agree with the details you hold. I haven't been able to establish the relationship,if any, of Peter Penfold (44) Sarah (42) and Jane(15) to any particular line of Penfold's. Peter who according to the 1851 census was born in Surrey could have returned to his "roots" or drifted into West Chiltington. The same applies to Oliver. You mention James Greenfield in your note. There are three James Greenfield's shown in the 1851 census for West Chiltington ages 49,22 and 14. none seem to fit in with the Jame christened in 1817. There is also a James at Storrington age 4. The only connection Greenfield/Penfold I can find goes back to 1585 when a Thomas Greenfield married Jeanne Penfold by licence at Chichester on 23 July. Thomas was of Billingshurst,Sussex Although my Penfolds lived in or around Pulborough for many years I haven't,as yet been able to find any connection with the Barton Penfold line . Will keep you posted. Best wishes Stan Clark of Ifield.

    3. Julie, I have just visited your website. I went to the section on Itchingfield and noticed William 1791. I have a direct link to William. He is my gt gt gt grandfather. I will be able to give you quite a bit on this line. Also linked are Louisa Rowland (Canada) and Julie Hughes-Owen (Australia) both on this list. I would be interested in knowing why you think that William moved to Henfield. He married Hannah Humphrey in Hartfield in 1821. At that time he was a widower. I know nothing of his former wife or whereabouts they lived. How have you progressed prior to John and Elizabeth Sandell ? I look forward to your response.
