I wouldn't rule it OUT but I wouldn't THINK or expect Dewalt used as a "middle" name for a German to be a surname. My reason for saying that is because German naming systems don't really have a first and middle name as we use them. The MIDDLE name is actually the rufname or call name which is similar to our given names. The FIRST name is really a saints' name or baptismal name--usually Johan (but not always). So if your ancestor was John David and went by David--I'd suspect Dewalt in this case is NOT a surname and not a clue for you. Joan In a message dated 6/12/2009 4:42:33 P.M. Thanks Joan. I concur completely. This was my first exposure to Dewalt/Theobaldt.. etc and wanted experienced input. Didn't want to spend time chasing the goose! In my case, the 2 were not seen together, but either one or the other. And as one would expect, the Theobaldt & Dewalt was used in the earlier yrs while he used David only in the later yrs.
