I guess I've been thinking about York County because Dillsburg is in York County, but being so close to the county border, I suppose I should also post my query in Adams and Cumberland Counties. Trouble is, I just have no indication where my John SMITH may have come from. For all I know, I should be looking at northern Maryland as well! Thanks. -Christine Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. For your John Smith, would you please contact me off list. I probably have some information for you. Your John Smith may have been the son of George Smith and Sarah Brandon Smith. First, your George may have been the son of either John Smith and his wife Margaret {unknown} or the son of William Smith and his wife Elizabeth {unknown}. Both lived in York County, Huntington Township, since the mid-1700's. . I have not yet found how they are related, but: John and Margaret Smith had children: George, John, Elizabeth, Eleanor and Hugh. William and Elizabeth Smith had children: James, George, William and Eleanor. One of the two George's married Sarah Brandon, daughter of Thomas Brandon, who owned property near the Smith families. Thomas Brandon was son of George Brandon. One of the two George Smith's had some property from his father, and some of the Brandon property and lived on either. The other George Smith was a miller. I have also been looking for these families, perhaps we can help each other. My husband is descneded from Hugh Smith, son of John and Margaret Smith. I have done extensive research on Hugh Smith and descendants, searching for the others. Judy Smith/Colorado -- We cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home. Edward R. Murrow

Denues and his obit (1923) says he was a prominent member of York Star Circle No. 47 Brotherhood of America and of Lady Franklin Home. Does anyone know what these organizations were/did? It seems the Lady Franklin Home was another post of the Brotherhood of America. I have a 1935 directory in my home library and it does not list the York Star Circle lodge/post, but it does list the Lady Franklin Home no 15 Brotherhood of America, and says it met 1st & 3rd Thursdays at the Giver bldg 47 South George St. I can't find anything that tells me anything about this organization and I'd be very appreciative to anyone who could offer some help. One other interesting thing is that Charles was a member of the GAR post 37, but his obit doesn't mention that at all. This tells me that his membership in the Brotherhood of America was more important to him than was his membership in the veteran post, when usually a vet's GAR membership was prominently listed in obits of the time. Thanks in advance for any help. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Seeking information on a Margaret Schwartz who married Ernest Ridgeway sometime after 1930. Ernest was married before and divorced prior to 1930. His 1942 WWII draft registration gives their address as RD #3 Dover, York PA. Ernest died in 1952. Margaret may have been the daughter of Henry William Schwartz (Wm H.) & Anna Mary. In the 1930 West Manchester census she is 25 and still single at home. She had a sister Kathleen in the 1920 census. William H as he is shown in the census records was a Post Master in North Codorus Twp. His father William A H Schwartz was a merchant. His son Abner who married Julian followed his fathers foot steps. Ernset is laid to rest in Jacobus at the Salem Union Cemetery. The plot card gives the owner of the plots as Margaret Schwartz. Within the block there is a Ralph I Smith (census records show he was married to a Violet M). There is also a stone for a Ann Margaret with no last name born 1910, perhaps an infant. Between Ernest Ridgeway and Ralph I Smith there are three blank spots. The care take has no record showing anyone is interred there and the only way he can be sure is to do a drill test. Margaret may have remarried as she would have only been 47 at the time of Ernest's passing. **************It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Find your travel deal here.
