    1. [PAYork] George Jacob Scheffer family of Codorus tp., York County, PA
    2. Ed Wevodau
    3. Here is another installment on early Shaffer/Sheffer/Schaeffer, et al., families of York County. I descend from George Ludwig Scheffer, brother of this George Jacob Scheffer. George Jacob Scheffer of Codorus tp., York County, PA There were two Jacob Scheffer/Sheffer’s in early York, both raising young families. They have occasionally been confused because the other Jacob Sheffer moved to Dover tp. during his final years, residing near the George Ludwig Sheffer, who was the son of John Sheffer, with whom George Jacob Sheffer is frequently linked. I have no been able to trace George Jacob’s family; however, there are promising deed records indicated below that surely pinpoint at least several of his children. I would be most appreciative if any one in York or Pennsylvania could check those references. IMMIGRATION: 1749 Dragon: George Jacob Schaffer, Johann Nicholas Schaffer [signed next to each other] George Jacob Sheffer, Codorus tp., York County, naturalized 7 Apr 1765 MARRIAGE EVIDENCE: York County Deed B191: Casper Keefer, yeoman, of Codorus tp. rel.to his son Ludwig Keefer, yeoman, of same 161A Codorus tp.: HISTORY: Part of two tracts surveyed for the said Casper Keefer in pursuance of a warrant dated 9 Mar 1753. The said Casper Keefer has decided to divide his lands between sons Ludwig and Abraham, subject to payments to be made to daughters Barbara (now wife of Jacob Shaffer, wheelwright, of Codorus tp.) and Margaret (now wife of Frederick Pfleger, blacksmith, of York tp.) --14 Nov 1763 ORPHANS COURT SEARCH: York County Orphans Court Records, 26 Mar 1756: Came into Court Maria Katharina Alt widow and administratrix of Valentine Alt late of Youk Township Weaver Deced and Prayed that Conrad Alt a minor Orphan Son of the said Valentine Aged nine years the eighteenth day of December last may be bound an apprentice to George Jacob Shaffer of Codorus Township Wheel Wright. Court Records, 27 May 1760. On May 27, 1760, his guardians petitioned the orphans court of Youk county to discharge from an indenture of apprenticeship the boy and his master, George Jacob Shaffer, wheelwright, to whom he had been apprenticed on March 26, 1756. The guardians petitioned that Conrad be apprenticed to Jacob Alt, weaver, and the Court so bound "the said Minor -- an Apprentice to Jacob Alt to learn the Trade of a Weaver during his minority. In consideraton whereof the said Jacob Alt Covenanteth to teach the said apprentice the trade or mistery of a weaver and to find him sufficient meat, drin, apparel, washing, and lodging during the said term and at the expiration thereof to pay unto the said aprentice to the value of four pounds in tools of his trade or that sum in money and one new suit of apparel and to teach him to read and write." 1. [PAYork] Charles Schaeffer/Shaffer of Cocalico tp., Lancaster County, and later Warrington tp., York County
    2. Ed Wevodau
    3. I have not fully researched this family; however, as indicated in a previous post, I suspect this Charles Schaeffer to be the father of Abraham Schaeffer (c1793-1825) of Dover Township, York County. The records below prove Charles's migration from Lancaster County to York County. I have glanced at but not compiled census records. In 1790, he appears in Cocalico tp., Lancaster County. From 1800 through 1840 in Warrington tp., York County. Only his name is given in 1840--the household members are not given; but, in 1830, his age range is 60-70. Since his brother Henry served as their mother's executor, I presume that Henry resided in York County as well. Brother Peter was in Warwick tp., Lancaster County, as of 1793. Note that Charles's wife is Elizabeth Roland, daughter of Joseph Roland. In 1850, a Jacob Sheffer in Warrington tp., 36 years of age, had a son named Rolandis. I welcome any additional information about this family, as I am rarely able to visit York County to peruse primary source records. York County Will Abstracts: Catharine Shafer. York County. Aug. 28, 1794. 1. Widow of Abraham Shafer. 2. Children: Charles, Peter, Elizabeth, Anna and Henry. 3. Executor: Henry Shafer. Lancaster Deed RR-150: Peter Sheafer, weaver, of Warwick tp. [the son of Abraham Sheafer, deceased, late of Cocalico tp.] quitclaims to Charles Sheafer & Henry Sheafer [sons & administrators of the said Abraham Sheafer, deceased] --They acknowledge having received their due shares in and out of the personal estate of their late father, who died intestate leaving a widow and five children. --27 Apr 1793 13-346: The following are four children of Joseph Roland, deceased, late of Earl tp.: 1. John Roland, yeoman, of Lancaster County 2. Betty, the wife of Charles Sheaffer, of York County, PA 3. Elizabeth Roland, spinster, of Cocalico tp. 4. Catharine, the wife of Philip Werntz, of Cocalico tp. [see Deed 13-349] --Jacob Roland, the eldest son of the said Joseph, acquired his late father’s plantation, consisting of 149a Earl tp. In 1784, Jacob Roland granted the same to one Peter Brown, subject to the dower of Joseph’s widow Barbara. The widow’s dower was to be distributed among the surviving heirs of Joseph Roland after her death. The said widow has lately died. The aforenamed heirs now acknowledge having received their due share in and out of her dower. –It is noted that Mary Roland, another daughter of Joseph Roland, has heretofore died intestate, unmarried, and without issue. --16 May 1816 Cocalico Reformed KB, Ephrata tp., Lancaster County, PA: Carl Schaefer & his wife Elizabeth had baptized: 1. Jacob, b. 30 Mar 1789, sp. Parents 2. Henry, b. 22 Feb 1790, sp. Parents

    1. [PAYork] Abraham Shaffer of Dover tp., York County, PA
    2. Ed Wevodau
    3. Related Familes: Peter Shaffer/Shaeffer of Carroll tp., York County, PA David Sheffer/Shaeffer of Dillsburg, York County, PA I have been reworking and updating my file of the Shaffer families of the Dover Township area. I will be posting a series of compiled data for Shaffer families in the 1760-1820 time frame. My own Shaffer lineage goes through George Ludwig Scheffer (1755-1829), son of John Scheffer, of Dover tp. However, I am in need of much assistance to flesh details out. This post focuses on Abraham Shaffer/Schafer/Schaffer of Dover tp. He is NOT related to the George Ludwig Scheffer or John Scheffer families; however, as he appears in the vicinity, I always find it of great value to research other families in order to better exclude them from my own. Abraham's parentage is uncertain; however, he had a child named Carolus (or Carl, or Charles) baptized in 1817. There was a Charles Schaeffer in adjoining Warrington tp. enumerated in the 1800 through 1840 federal censuses. He appears to have been the Charles Schaeffer of Cocalico tp., son of Abraham Schaeffer, who migrated circa 1793 to York County. The nearby location and naming patterns fit; however, I have no evidence to link the two. Census records also show Charles Schaeffer with a child in 1800 and 1810 who fits the expected age of Abraham Shaffer of Dover tp. I have not looked at Abraham's estate records--there probably were Orphans Court records for his minor children. Also, I have not had opportunity to fully investigate Charles Schaeffer of Warrington tp. in either church or court records. There may be something further of value. I will send a separate post on the little I have gathered on Charles Schaeffer. Here follows compiled data on Abraham Schaeffer/Shaffer/Schafer: Abraham Schafer (c1793-1825) Family of Dover tp. On his return to Dillsburg he erected a fine dwelling house and a large coach-maker's shop, and has succeeded in establishing a large and lucrative trade in the borough and surrounding country in buggies, spring wagons, hacks, phaetons, etc. He was married in 1868 to Mary Baish, daughter of Joseph and Mary Baish; of the two children born to this union--a boy and a girl--the girl only is living. I found Edward Tyler and family appearing in the 1830 census of Darby Township, Union County, Ohio and Edward and John Tyler, age 25, (likely his son) and a "Sarah Smith" born 1803 in PA (his daughter?) in the 1850 census of Union County, Ohio which is the same location to which my G-G-grandparents, Martin and Catherine (Ebersole) Wetzel migrated, first found in the 1880 census of Darby Twp, Union Co., Ohio. Catherine would be Edward's G-G-granddaughter. Another interesting note. 1850 Union Co, Ohio census says Edward was born in MD. Martin and Catherine's first two children were born in MD. Seems like likely family connections. Also, thank you for Sue's address. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There is also a brother, John, that supposedly went with him to Ohio. After OH, Samuel went to Michigan, bought some land there - no indication John went. Samuel is the last link - no listed father or mother name - which would be required to determine further ancestors. Thanks for the additional OH info. Author: edmorrill33 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.york/15026.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In the 1800 census Samuel is Samuel McGau of Hopewell Twp. Jane married Francis Simms 23 April 1807 from Cathart's Private Regester. Eleanor married James Moffit May 7, 1805 Cathart's. Samuel was first in Hopewell in the tax records of 1795 when he had 3 cattle,3 Horses and 220 acres. Samuels son William b. 1776 died 1831. William's wife Jane born 17780 died 1841. Eleanor and James Moffit probably had a daughter Jane b. 8 June 1806. Samuel paid taxes on 228 or 230 A. in Hopewell until 1810 when he transferred it to Robert McGaw his son. Robert was single in 1800 through 1812 meanig he was at least 21 in 1800. I didn't look beyond 1812. Samuel who died in 1814 was over 59 yrs in age since he was over 45 in 1800. Samuel McGau sold 1 5/8 Acres to the Hopewell Presbyterian Congregation in 1797 for 5 Shillings. witnesses were William Mc Gaw and Eloner McGaw. DEed 3O-147 in 1836 shows that 228 A. of Robert McGaue was seized by the Sheriff and sold to Robert Gemmell. Alexader Thompson was the executor of Samuel McGaue. There is a Samuel McGaw in the 1790 Philadelphia census. Could he have moved to York and bought 220A? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am a member of the DAR through John Saxon, and I would still like to add Andrew, especially since he fought in the entire Revolutionary War, unlike so many others. Did you ever send me the info on the Davis family in WI? I'm 1,200 miles away from home (and my hard copy records).....I'm staying with my daughter and family in Montana (cold Montana!!!) while we await the birth of my new granddaughter. I guess MN is just as cold......I've never experienced cold like this....here it is 11 am and it's at least -10! (and dropping!) The early records of Sophia and David Waltermyer are recorded in the Church records. Looks like I have a plethora of information in my FTM program......which I have with me. If you need specific records, I'll read through what I have on my laptop. Have a great holiday. Janeva JanevaLCF@aol.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
