    1. [PAYork] Casper Spahr of Dover tp., York County, and Chambersburg, Franklin County
    2. Ed Wevodau
    3. (Apologies if this is a repeat post. It was returned to me as failed and I never saw it in the digests sent to me.) Based on enough circumstantial evidence, I offically acknowledge Casper Spahr as an ancestor. His eldest daughter Catharine married George Ludwig Schaeffer/Scheffer/Sheffer of Dover tp., York County. In his last will & testament abstracted below, Casper acknowledges an agreement with George "Sheavor" made in Little York. I presume this to be for Casper's land. Sundry land surveys in Dover tp. show Casper Spahr acquiring a tract of land adjoining his uncle Michael Spahr. Later surveys show this tract in the possession of said George Ludwig Schaeffer. Casper was born to his father George in Earl Township, Lancaster County, in 1739. George Spahr and most of his children later migrated to Dover tp., where his brother Michael had previously taken up land. Casper probably moved to Franklin County around 1790. His son Jacob's baptismal sponsorship of George Ludwig Schaeffer's son Jacob in 1790 is my last evidence of he or his other children in York County. Casper married Anna Margaretha (Mehl) Schettron, the widow of Abraham Schettron. This is also based on circumstantial evidence, but I would believe that most researchers, when examining the data below, would draw the same conclusion. Seeking contact with any descendant of Casper Spahr. His son Jacob's son David migrated to Cooper County, Missouri, where he was a well-known tobacconist. All Spahr's in Franklin County census records prior to 1850 can be traced to Casper; however, I have never had opportunity to do onsite research on this family in Franklin. Any assistance appreciated! (His wife, from whom he separated in 1786, allegedly died in Chambersburg in 1823; however, I have no evidence.) Data follows..... 1. Re: [PAYork] Help locate the birthplace of these Zimmerman children
    2. David Zimmerman
    3. Jean, Thank you for your response. I appreciate your taking the time to look into this query. With a name like Zimmerman, you have to look for the vaiations as the name has many possibities dependent on how the census taker heard it pronounced. The "Z" letter in German has a "ts" sound. So, I have found the following variations in my research; Simmerman, Zimerman, Simerman, Sumermin (in 1790), Skimeron, Summerman and don't get me started on Carpenter. I believe if you check your 1800 index, you will find two Zimmermans in Somerset (Junior and Senior) and one in Berks Counties. You should also find a Michael Zimerman in Berks County. Thanks again for looking. ----- Original Message ----- From: <JEANFAZZ@aol.com> To: <payork@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 02, 2009 5:51 PM Subject: Re: [PAYork] Help locate the birthplace of these Zimmerman children > There are three Michael Zimmermans in the Index to the 1800 Census of > Pennsylvania. > The index only lists the head of households. > One in Somerset County and a Michael and Michael Jr., Berks County. > Jean > **************New year...new news. 1. [PAYork] Help locate the birthplace of these Zimmerman children
    2. David Zimmerman
    3. Michael and Elizabeth Zimmerman came to Allegheny County, PA about 1810, but I can not determine where they came from. Their children were all born in Pennsylvania according to the 1850 census. The following information is for their children and is considered to be accurate: Elizabeth (aka Betsy) born 1795, died (unk) Married David Soles in Allegheny County on 11 March, 1813. William born 1796, died 1879 Married Elizabeth Jordan in Allegheny County on 22 December, 1825. Margaret born 4 April, 1800, died 25 April, 1881 Married William McKimens in Westmoreland or Allegheny County in 1820. Mary (or May) born 1808, Died 1865 Married James Jordan in unknown location. Harriet (aka Minah) born 1810, died (unk) Never married. Anyone with access to birth, baptism, christening or other church records for your local county are requested, at your convenience, to see if a record exists for these individuals. There are Michael Zimmermans in numerous counties in Pennsylvania so the potential exists for them to have come from anywhere in the state. There is information, as yet not substantiated, that Margaret was born in Lancaster County, Pa. Your help in locating the birthplace for these children may lead to the place the Zimmerman family lived before going to Allegheny County, Pa. Just one brick at a time is helpful................... Your help is most appreciated.

I do have some info on one of his sons, Jacob Haynes. I found the following info in a book in the Kansas State Historical Society. It's an excerpt from a biographical sketch on my Great, Great, Great Grandfather Robert Patterson Haynes. Based on this info, I'm assuming that Jacob Haynes was born in PA around 1784. "Jacob Haynes, a native of Pennsylvania and the son of Andrew Haynes, who was also born there and who traced his ancestry to Germany. Grandfather Haynes (Andrew) followed farming all of his life; his son Jacob employed himself as a mechanic, and was engaged in the amory at Harper's Ferry, in the employ of the Government from 1810 until 1837. In the meantime he served in the War of 1812 and participated in the battle of Blandensburg. In 1837 he (Jacob)emigrated to Ohio and located on land in the vicinity of Chillicothe, where he engaged in farming and became well-to-do. He finally retired from active labor, and died in Bellbrook in 1872, at the age of eighty-eight years. He was a Democrat of the old Jacksonian type, and during his younger years belonged to the German Reformed Church. Later he identified himself with the Methodists. The mother of Mr. Haynes bore the maiden name of Mary Reed; she was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and was the daughter of William Reed a native of Co! unty Tyrone, Ireland, who emigrated to America, employed himself as a mechanic and married a Miss Patterson." 1. [PAYork] George Ludwig Scheffer/Sheffer of Dover tp., York County, PA

    3. Related families: John Sheffer & wife Rebecca of Dover tp. Jacob Sheffer & wives Catharine & Maria of Dover tp. Daniel Sheffer/Shaffer of Dover tp. George Spahr & his wife Elizabeth of Warrington tp. David Sheffer of Dover tp. & later Butler tp., Adams County, PA Andrew Strayer & wife Catharine of Dover tp. George Ludwig Sheffer is my ancestor. Later, I will post data on his father Johannes Sheffer/Scheffer, who first resided in Leacock tp., Lancaster County, before migrating to Dover tp., York County, circa 1758. George Ludwig's family record is known only through circumstantial evidence, and revisions are likely necessary. I will need to make a second post to cover his land holdings. George Ludwig Sheffer allegedly married Maria Catharina Spahr, daughter of Casper Spahr & his wife Anna Margaretha Mehl. Evidence of her parentage is probable but not proven conclusively. George Scheffer resided on Casper Spahr's real estate as surveys prove, and Casper's last will & testament probated in Chambersburg indicates that daughter Caty had already received her full inheritance. He also notes a bond due his estate from "George Sheavor" per an agreement in "Little York." Other evidence proves Casper's migration from Dover tp. to Chambersburg. Casper Spahr's son Jacob Spahr sponsored one of George Scheffer's children at his baptism. Seeking contact with anyone who can help flesh out the family record. I would also love it if someone could check these deed references, which involve a George Sheffer of York tp. who obtained land in Straban: York County Deed G400: George Sheffer, yeoman, of York tp. mort.to Valentine Krantz, yeoman, of York Town 166A Straban tp., adjoining Samuel Houldsworth, John Flemming, John Galbraith, and others: HISTORY: Same tract that George Sheffer lately purchased at a sheriff’s sale. --4 Sep 1783 George Sheffer to John Spangler, 2B-287, Straban, 1784 George Sheffer & ux to James Fleming, 2I-235, Straban, 1793 This is POSSIBLY the George of Dover, although I have my doubts. But the information contained within--especially the 1793 record--should be conclusive. George Ludwig Sheffer of Dover tp., York County, PA TAX SEARCH: I have had neither time nor opportunity to view complete runs of York County tax lists. From 1779-1783 I find only one George Schaeffer in York County proper (excluding modern-day Adams townships). He appears where expected—Dover tp.—but then seems to move to York tp. BUT, I find deed records for a George Schaeffer in York tp. proving that he acquired land in Straban tp. There are later deeds for this George that I have not checked—perhaps they will show him to be the man of Dover or maybe a different George Schaeffer. But, if it is not him in York tp., then why was he not enumerated in Dover tp. or an adjoining area? Dover tp. (1779-1783): George Shafer, 1780 (no land) York tp. (1779-1783): George Sheffer, 1781-1783 (no land; 2 males, 2 females ’83) Dover tp., York County, PA (checked only 1812-17): George Sheffer, 1812-1817, 220A (farmer ’15-17) Dover tp., York County, PA (checked only 1829-1831): George Sheffer, 1829-1831, 225A (heirs ’31) ESTATE SEARCH: Of great significance, please note the persons indebted to the estate. These are probably sons and sons-in-law. Records prove sons David and John as well as son-in-law Andrew Strayer, all of whom appear. Son Jacob does not appear—but was his full name George Jacob—and hence the George Sheffer below? A George Spahr married an Elisabeth Shaffer. This George’s wife lived 1779 to 1863. They appear in scattered records linked to George Sheffer’s known children. I believe him to be a son-in-law. A Daniel Shaffer died testate in Dover tp. in 1832. He is probably a son who left no heirs besides his wife Elizabeth. That leaves David Bender for whom I have found nothing. York County Estate File: George Sheffer of Dover tp. (1829) 1. Note: This record suggests the widow was now deceased, with the executors carrying out the provisions made in the above testament.) 4. Two accounts, including the widow’s items, were not copied. The inventory and testament have been copied and are located in the Shaffer Family File. CEMETERY SEARCH: I have not viewed the actual tombstones. I would love to see a picture that confirms “George L. Schefer” and wife “Catharine Scheffer, wife of Lewis George.” The name George Lewis (or Ludwig) is what links the George of Dover tp. to the George of early Lancaster. 1. [PAYork] Jacob Shaffer of York Town and later Dover tp., York County, PA
    2. Ed Wevodau
    3. Related Family: Peter Boas of York Town Jacob Scheffer of York Town and later Dover Township, York County, PA I have seen this Jacob Sheffer errantly confused with George Jacob Sheffer of Codorus tp.; however, the records below should clearly indicate that this Jacob resided in York Town before removing to Dover in Dover tp. after marrying the widow of Melchior Benedict. His last will & testament names six children. Records below indicate that Jacob, John, and Anna Maria (wife of Peter Boas) resided in York Town until at least the early 1790's. I suspect that further research could prove the spouses of daughters Elisabeth & Margaret, as well as add further light on Jacob himself. I have not fully researched this family. He is not related to my own; however, the confusion caused by the commonality of names requires that his family be fleshed out so that I can exclude it from my own relations. Any assistance greatly appreciated. TAX SEARCH: York tp.
