The Church had a fire some years back that destroyed some records. They do have a Church Archivist, but the one I spoke to a few years ago was not very helpful. There is list of burials that was compiled by the York Historical Society in the 30s' Some of the markers are no longer readable, and most likely were not readable when the compilation was conducted. I went to bed early last night, so I didn't find your messages until just now. Glad to see you got it resolved. It's been a long time since I ordered anything, and things were quite different then. I think they just had one simple form you filled out and mailed in. I'm lucky enough to live in NJ, and so I go over to Lancaster and York Cos at least twice a year. They are wonderful places to do research. For what it's worth, everyone at the York Archives is very nice and helpful. If you get stuck, just give them a call. The book I have only goes up to 1850, but they have probate file indexes there that go from 1850 on up. I like that the documents in the probate files are original documents, so you will see the actual handwriting, signatures, how they made their mark, etc. Since I get to go in person, I browse the files of everyone associated with the person - brothers, uncles, sons-in-law, etc. It's amazing what you are able to find. Good luck. Hi Pam and Karen, I hope I am not intruding, but I would like to ask Pam about another family in Pennsylvania in the early 1800's. My GGGgrandfather, Thomas Elliott, was born in York County in 1807. His father, Andrew Elliott, died about 1822-23 in PA. I don't know if the family was still in York County at the time, but I would like to take a chance that Andrew's will might be in the book you cite. Could you check for Elliotts (possibly mis-spelled Elliot) in the range from 1795 to 1823? I am in California, so PA research is a reach. Thanks a bunch. Best regards, Chuck Elliott

Thank you very much, Pam. The Andrew Finley that you mentioned was a son of John Finley. Whenever you have time, could you possibly check for the names of Baxter and Beaty or Beatty? No hurry at all. I live in Columbus, Ohio, so I have a hard time researching records in PA. Karen
I checked the book "Index to the Probate Inventories of York County PA 1749-1850" by David and Brenda Paul. It lists the following Finleys: Aaron, 1794, Straban Twp * (* indicates now Adams Co) Andrew 1807, Hopewell David, 1799, Chanceford James, 1783, Cumberland * James, 1764, Hamilton Ban * (vendue) John 1782, Chanceford Martha, 1807, Chanceford Michael, 1785, (York Co) William, 1825, Lw. Chanceford There are no listings for Fenley, Findley, or other similar speallings. Hopewell Twp was not formed until 1767, so you may be looking for someone in the Shrewsbury records prior to that date. Good luck. ----- Original Message ----- From: "karen conley" <KARENCONLEY@webtv.net> To: <PAYORK@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 04, 2009 12:17 PM Subject: [PAYork] York County Wills >I am trying to locate a wil for a John Finley, born around 1688 and died > around 1760 in Hopewell Twp.
