Hi I happen to know a little about them. Years ago I did a thesis on the barrens of Pennsylvania. The results of that study suggests that they were areas of grass or brush with limited or no trees present. They were typically found on shallow limestone soil areas with a very large area (20,000 acres) in the Allentown-Bethlehem area. Another large area of about 3,000 acres was located near State College. Reviewing old documents suggests that they were fairly common throughout the limestone areas of the state. Early settlers gave them the name barrens as they though they were poor soil areas and not good farmland. These areas actually are highly productive although because of their shallow nature may have limited moisture available in dry years. I was doing some research of old land warrants in Lancaster County just this week and mistakenly pulled up one for York County and it referenced a barren adjoining the property. Unfortunately I did not make note of where it was located. If I find it again I will let you know. Some researchers show J. Phillip Emig's wife's maiden name as Sprenkle. One of the places we'd seen Anna Maria's maiden name as Sprenkle was in the LDS Ancestral File. A Sprenkle cousin contacted the person who made the submission and she indicated that, upon reflection, she didn't think Anna Maria's maiden name was Sprenkle but rather that Anna Maria's maiden name was Gemblin. I know he was born in York County, PA January 30, 1761 and I'n not sure if Sarah was from this area or not. She was born January 1, 1792. They apparently moved sometime before 1786. Any information, even his military service would be helpful and interesting. Thanks Lisa Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. An even better way to locate properties is to use older aerial photos. There was a set that covers all of PA that was taken by the USDA in the late 1930's or early 1940's. They have been scanned and are on a free site (Penn Pilot) maintained by Penn State University: http://www.pennpilot.psu.edu/ There are two sets of aerial photos on the site, 1937-1942, and 1967-1972. Zoom into the location you want. Select the year range from the small menu box near the top center of the map. Red dots will indicate the centers of the aerial photos. Click on the dot, and a window will pop up with the photo information. You can download the photos (as compressed zip files) in three different resolutions. The files need to be "unzipped" prior to viewing them. If you don't have software to unzip files, free programs to unzip the photos can be downloaded from various sites, including: http://www.pkware.com/download-software/free-unzip These photos are especially helpful for locating the original property boundaries in areas that have been developed since the 1940's. It is often easier to see the original tract boundaries in these photos than it is in recent photos. These photos were taken before the Interstate highway system and most of the PA Turnpike. Finding an exact location can be more difficult if you were using those roads as landmarks. It may be easier to find the exact spot in the photos from the 1960's and 1970's, and then switch to the earlier set if needed. I found the preceding dates from a deed transferring the same land to his son, Peter, in 1792. Unfortunately the York county archives don't appear to have the 1767 deed in their online deed book index. Is anyone aware if there are any other sources for deeds in that timeframe? Otherwise, is anyone familiar with Adam? He appears to have been married twice, his second wife being Susannah Eltzroth, widow of Valentine Eltzroth, marrying her in Nov 1778. I'm not aware of Adam's first wife's name. Adam died 19 Oct 1802 and is buried at Conewago Chapel cemetery in Adams Co. Any help is greatly appreciated! I have the entire original colonial sequence you are seeking: my indexed survey A-463, p.64 in Volume 2: Berwick, Oxford, Hamilton, Tyrone, Huntington and Latimore townships, Original PA Land Record Series. There is also a cross-indexed 'connected survey map' (map #2) which shows the extent of each survey indexed, shape, roads, streams, etc. - and its location. A research friend also showed me a 'new' and very neat trick. Download Google Earth (the free version). Zoom to the desired location - and follow the streams and roads to approximate the property location (as noted on my connected survey maps), then follow fence lines / tree lines and presto - you can see (as of about four years ago when those satellite photos were taken) exactly where those properties are! Not much has changed in 250 years. There is a 'free' complete name index for each volume on the website. Book and map is available from the York Co Heritage Trust, the Adams Co Historical Society, or direct from me. see http://www.paland.us for more info. I'm working on completing all of Adams County by the end of the year. That means: Menallen, Franklin, Butler, Hamiltonban, Liberty, and Highland (outside the Manor of Maske), should be done by the end of 2009. Dr. Neal O.
