We are talking about the same Daniel Nickey. I have the York County Archives. It also shows that Martha married Andrew Altland after the death of Daniel, exact date unknown to me. Do you have any information of their children. All I got from the archives is Elizabeth. I can provide considerable information on the Nickey family tree back to Johann Niecke (b. abt 1684). I have a quick request. I'm going to the MGC, for 3 days, June 26-28, and I want to use my time wisely. I have two goals. The primary goal, is to work on solving the mystery of Jacob Arney. I know his son, Christian Arney, Sr. was born in Yorktown, York County, Pennsylvania in 1750 (by Christian's own statement). Now I want proof, if it still exists. Finding proof of Christian Arney, Sr.'s birth or baptism would give me pertinent information about Christian's parents, more specifically their names. Then I need to find proof of Jacob Arney's existence in Pennsylvania prior to 1767 (land purchases or sales, tax rolls, census, etc.) I have went over the Pennsylvania Archives and believe I have found as much information as it may offer. So, where else should I look (books, microfilm, microfiche, etc.)? It has long been believed that Jacob Arney was the son of a Frederick Ernigh, who arrived in the USA, September 11th, 1732, aboard the Pennsylvania Merchant Ship, Captain John Stedman. However, conflicting information shows that this Jacob died in Pennsylvania leaving behind a widow, Barbara. If I can find proof of this Jacob, truly being the son of Frederick Ernigh (who died in 1771) and that Jacob died in Pennsylvania, this would put this possibility to rest, once and for all! Which would push me in the direction, I believe I'm going, of trying to find out who my Jacob Arney really was, who were his siblings, who were his parents, was he born in the USA or did he immigrate with his family, where was his family from, etc.? The secondary goal Jacob Arney (along with his family, including Christian Arney, Sr.) moved from Pennsylvania to North Carolina in 1767. Jacob had a son, Peter, born in 1772. Jacob died in 1784. In 1787, Peter Arney was bound over, by the court (being labeled an "orphan") to a John Fullenwider (Fulenwider), at the age of 15, to learn the trade of a miller, until the age of 21. Around 1793, Peter Arney moved to Wythe County, Virginia, where he married a woman named Margaret, and began his family. I have been unable to find any record or proof of this marriage. The only marriage of a Peter Arney in Wythe County Virginia (that I can find) was to a Catherine Fox in 1827. I have also been unable to find any record or proof of any of his children's births or baptisms in Wythe County, Virginia. Around 1799, Peter Arney was in Wilson County, Tennessee. Peter Arney died in what was Overton County, Tennessee in 1845. (Yes, I know TMI) So, I want to spend my time with these two goals in mind. Any suggestions on how to "plan my attack" would be great appreciated. Thank you for your time, consideration, and cooperation, I truly appreciate it.

Sarah Beck is married to Josiah Rensel by this time, living in the same household as her parents. The other children of Joseph and Nancy Beck, Mary and George, are also in the household. Mary is listed as H Help (which I am assuming is House Help). I also noticed that the enumerator used this designation a lot on the previous pages for the older girls in the families. It looks like something he was doing as a standard practice. I don't know anything more about the children. Good luck on your search. Beck's father, George Beck, died in 1831. According to his will, he left the following children: Joseph, Elizabeth and four other minor children under the age of 14- Eve, Mary Ann, Leah, and Sarah. (So we know that all these siblings were born before 1831). Joseph S. Beck had the following children with Nancy Studebaker- Sarah b:1839, Mary A. b:1840, and George O. b:1845. (Originally, I was using a transcript of the 1850 census listing this Sarah as 21 years old. This was a typo. When I went back and checked the ORIGINAL 1850 census it lists Sarah as 11 years old, making her birth year 1839 and hence this Sarah is the daughter of Joseph and Nancy Beck). Joseph S. Beck had the following children with Mary Ann Leas- Joseph L. b:1866, John Allen b:1870, and my g-grandmother Emma Jane Beck b:1876. (Joseph S. Beck was 25 years older than his second wife.) Hope this helps. I did make an earlier post to explain the typo in the 1850 transcript when compared with the original. Let me know if I can be of further assistance. Of the two girls--Sarah(b.1839) and Mary A (b.1841)--in the Joseph & Nancy Beck household in 1850, I had thought that Sarah, who married Josiah Rensel, was the daughter and that Mary, "H Helper" in 1860, was not. Are you saying the opposite is likely the case since Joseph was named guardian of his youngest sister, Sarah? So that Mary was likely Nancy's daughter? But Joseph also had four other sisters--Elizabeth, Eve, Mary Ann, & Leah. Elizabeth and Eve seem to be accounted for, but what about this sister Mary Ann? Is she accounted for? Also, are we both "on the same page" with George O. as the son of Joseph and Nancy? Do you have anything on George other than the censuses I've referenced? Not sure of the sources used for the data on Joseph and Nancy in the SFNA books, but suspect it was largely from some elderly family member's recollecion. Although there is reference to a family Bible owned, at one time, by a Sarah Rensel--that prompted me to think that Sarah (b.1839) was Nancy's daughter. Alvin G. Faust, b.1885, a descendant of the immigrant Clement Studebaker, spend his lifetime researching the Clement line that was published in volume I. Unfortunately, SFNA does not have his papers. I was also wondering how the marriage of Joseph Beck and Nancy Studebaker can be proven. I have never found anything with her maiden name connecting her in marriage with my Joseph Beck. However, I did find a household sale list for the Studebaker family where Joseph Beck purchased some household items about the time of his marriage to Nancy. I have a bit more information- Recently revisited the Altland cemetery and found a Revolutionary War Veteran marker at the George Beck Sr.(b:1755)graveside. I will have to research this new development. FYI- My gg grandmother, Joseph Beck's second wife, was Mary Ann Leas b: 25 Sept 1840 d:18 June 1911. Her Father was John Leas b:5 Aug 1809 d:17 Jan 1887 buried at Burmudian Church of the Brethren in Washington Twp., York Co., Pa and mother, Mary Lerew b:8 Sept 1816 d:21 Mar 1875 also buried at Burmudian Church of the Brethren. This was the second marriage for Mary Ann Leas also. She was first married to Benjamin Lerew b:about 1835 d:1865 -see Administrative accounts Feb 1865, orphan's court, Adams County, Pa. Jacob Forst guardian of minor child Annie Laura Lerew, minor child of Benjamin Lerew, deceased. Again, this can get very confusing since Mary Ann Leas' mother was a Lerew and Mary Ann Leas's first marriage was also to a Lerew. Mary Ann Leas was very close in age to Joseph's daughter Mary A. Beck by his first wife Nancy Studebaker. My g-grandmother, Emma Jane Beck, said that her mother- Mary Ann Leas, being much younger than her husband Joseph Beck was great friends with her stepdaughter, Mary A. Beck, and these two Marys were more like sisters. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. That was my assumption based on the ages, if correct, of Eve, Joseph and Nancy Studebaker as published in the 3-volume Studebaker Family in America. Am a board member of the Studebaker Family National Association with responsibility for the ongoing SFNA project to extract all genealogy data from the volumes for input into a comprehensive computer database. Lots of things come to light when doing/proofing manual data entry, e.g., the Beck - Studebaker conundrum. Am wondering if you have since clarified others said to be the offspring of Joseph & Nancy, especially Mary b. c1840 who appears as a "H Helper" in their household on the 1860 census. Especially since Joseph's 2nd wife is a "Mary A. born c1841" on the 1880 census. Obviously their two sons, Joseph and John, are incorrectly attributed to Joseph & Nancy in the SFNA volumes. Also find daughter Sarah married to Josiah Rensel/! Rentzel by 1860. Previously unknown, I find a George O. Beck, b. c1845 per the 1850 census, died Jan. 2, 1886, buried in Altland Cemetery. (The later thanks to your efforts.) George O. is easily found in both the 1870 and 1880 censuses as Oliver Beck married to--Mary A!! Who were all these Mary's? It's my wish to get this all resolved for the Studebaker Family database and future products. Anything you have turned up since your 2004 post will be much appreciated. --Sandra Studebaker Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello everyone, I have finished indexing the names for a new database for the Madeira Mamore Expedition of 1878 which involved constructing a railroad in Brazil by US engineers, contractors and laborers. Many names in the database are Irish and many were from southeast PA. The names are mostly from PA, NJ, NY, DE, MA, MD, WV, KY and OH My project started as a search for person named Philip BOWERS in my family tree who I finally found in one of the newspaper articles and my project since expanded into something much more. Since I had collected so much information I thought it might be a good time to share it with other researchers. The project consists of two web pages: 1) a source or reference page (bibliography) with links to where the names were found, and 2) the database of names to which it is linked You can access both at the web site below: http://web.rtmc.net/~bobmoyer/1878/sources.htm I you have a missing person from this time period you need to check the database, especially if they were from PA, NJ, NY, DE or MD. The names in the list are not currently found by searching the Internet or Rootsweb. Rootsweb support said the names will all eventually become indexed - indexing runs in two month cycles. Short Synopsis: The Disastrous American Expedition of 1878 that included the contractors P. & T. Collins (Col. George Earl Church) and the laborers who went to Brazil to build a railroad was also called the "The Railroad of Death" and a "railroad from no-place to no-where". It was estimated that a worker died for every sleeper that was laid in the jungle and the loss of workers was on a scale that rivaled the Panama Canal project. The purpose of this project is to create a database of names by transcribing newspaper accounts, books and other sources about the expedition. Careful attention has been given to separate these names from the later Farquar/Jekyll expedition of 1907-1912. Thousands of men from many countries lost their lives in both expeditions. I've read that many men kept diaries while working in Brazil and I have a few in my sources but I'm sure there are others. If you have anything to add I would welcome your contribution. Happy Hunting - please let me know if you find anything useful. Sincerely, Bob Moyer Instructor, Ed2go - Genealogy Basics Researching the Pennsylvania names of Moyer, Rempp, Klug, Mattern, Magargal and BOWERS, the name that originally started this project.
