I am hoping that he is the Alexander McCarty that I have been searching for. I found Alexander McCarter in the 1790 Census in Mount Pleasant township. Also a couple of mentions in the History of Adams County book. The Alexander that I am searching was married to (possibly) a Margaret. They had 8 children that I know of - Amos,Aaron, Eli, Moses, Isaac, Hiram, Rebecca and Hannah. I have possible dates on a couple of them, but nothing for sure. Would appreciate any help or advice. I know nothing of his parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, etc. I do know that he was a coal miner. In 1870 he married Anna (Annie) Hall. She had come to Kentucky from England. They had 4 sons: Charles, James Harry, Columbus, & Eugene Mosell. Some of the places they lived were Nelsonville, Ohio and later, Oregon. I desperately need help on this. I get so tired of three or four people in the same family having the same names. And what about those enumerators who didn't bother to ask for initials that might have distinguished between cousins or a father and his son? Lewis Beckwith was 16 years older than his second wife, Sarah Dean Grancal(?) Stewart Beckwith. The Washington County Lewis Beckwith and Sarah Stewar(d)t must be another couple although their marriage date certainly fits the Jackson County, VA (WV) pair. The g-g-granddaughter sent me the birthdates of Lewis and Sarah--04/26/1815 and 04/12/1832. I'm planning to go in a few weeks to the Ohio River Valley counties to finish up some research on my own family, so I just might include a run to Jackson County and look up tax and assessor records at the Court House. I tried to access them on line but had no luck. If I can find anything that sorts out these Grancals and Stewa! rts and Beckwiths, I'll let you know. I might even go to Marietta to do some looking!! If you like, you can e-mail me directly at [email protected] Thanks again for your help. More later. Joan in Fairmont Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It's so nice to find them under an alternate spelling!!!!!!!!!!! I'll take any information you can come up with. When I started the search for Sarah Dean, I was taking on more of a job than I expected. If you have helped or tried to help somebody find ancestors, you know how frustrating rattling bones can be. Actually, there are several facts known about Sarah. Her great-great-granddaughter is trying to find out more about Sarah's first husband (unknown Stewart), where they lived until his death (sometime between 1857-1860), and where their son James was after the 1870 Census. She married her second husband Lewis Beckwith, circa 1860, and had a second son in 1861. The granddaughter wonders where Sarah and her second husband met. You can see how complicated/confusing this search is--especially when PA, OH, and VA (now WV) are part of the mix. ! I doubt very much if anyone will be able to solve these family mysteries unless there is information at the county court houses that hasn't been put on line yet. And, of course, there is the usual duplication of names to make it even harder to determine who is who. Send me what you have. I will appreciate it very much. The Perry Historians will be hosting another of its Special Presentations - this time on Civil War Era Firearms. Did you know that disease was the leading cause of death in the Civil War? Did you know that the second leading cause of death was the famed .58 caliber "minie" ball? What were some of the nicknames soldiers gave to the imported weapons, and what was the favorite firearm of the foot soldier? These questions and more will be answered in Steve Jury's presentation entitled "Firearms of the Civil War." So come to The Perry Historians / Harry Lenig Library near New Bloomfield, Perry Co., PA. on Sunday, May 23, 2010 at 2:00 p.m., and hear Steve discuss the never ending problem of how to supply firearms for millions of soldiers, and how technology improved in firearms during the four years of the war. >From smooth bore to rifled muskets, to breech loading rim fires, Steve has it all. Many of the firearms Steve talks about will be on display for guests to view along with a demonstration on loading procedures for muzzleloaders, and a question and answer period. If the Civil War or firearms in general are of interest to you, we think you will enjoy this presentation. Light refreshments will be served following the presentation. This is FREE to all and all are welcome to attend!
