I just returned from Washington County, Indiana, where I visited the graves of Jeremiah Payne and Sarah McCoy Payne. I descend from them through their son William who married Elizabeth Dawalt. Jeremiah went by "Jerry". He was born in 1769 in either Pennsylvania or Maryland, according to information I found in Indiana, but I'm not really sure. He died February 1, 1861 in at his home near Harristown, Indiana in Washington County. He and Sarah (who went by "Sally") are buried in the Old Hebron Cemetery, which is unfortunately not very well maintained. I also visited the Pigeon Roost site. There is a mass grave there where Mrs. Elias Payne and the seven Payne children are buried along with some of the Collings family. It was a very sobering experience. Information I received in Indiana indicated that Jeremiah's parents were Samuel Payne and Mary Stillwell. Samuel Payne lived in Springhill Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania about 1772-1795. During the Revolutionary War he served as a Second Lieutenant under Colen George Ashman with the 2nd Battalion, 7th Company. The family moved to Nelson County, Kentucky, where they lived from about 1796 to 1804. Samuel owned 170-200 acres at Cox's Creek. they moved to Butler County, Ohio, where they lived from about 1805 to 1828. ---------- > From: LSK@GDM.com > To: PAYNE-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: any info on Jeremiah Payne -Payne's of Pidgeon Roost Massacre > Date: Thursday, October 07, 1999 2:41 PM > > I am very new at this genealogical searching and this is my first inquiry so please forgive any errors or presumptions on my part. :) I am looking for the parents or any information regarding my ancestor Jeremiah Payne. I have traced my history to him & then I am not finding any more info. > > I know that he and his brother Elias Payne moved from KY to Indiana and settled at Pidgeon Roost. (Near present day Vienna or Scottsburg IN.) There was a massacre in approx. 1812 and Elias & his entire family where killed. Jeremiah and his family survived. It is from he (Jeremiah) that I am descended. I know that he was born at Shelby,Kentucky (not Shelbyville KY) about 1773 and married Sallie "Sarah" McCoy on May 9th 1797. I do not have his date of death. I know that he had at least one brother named Elias who was perhaps married to a woman with the maiden name of Bridgewater(?) and they had approx. 7 children. This fact is mentioned an account by the Collins Family of the Pidgeon Roost Massacre . It is in book form. There are also several other accounts. > > What I am looking for is information on the parents of Jeremiah & Elias or any information which may help me in locating this information. Or where this branch of the family came from before settling in Shelby,KY. (Family tradition says they came form Virginia. so far family history has proven true, but I know that it cannot be totally trusted. I contacted a KY library & was told that there did exist a settlement called Shelby, Ky. in what is now Pike Co. This information was found in a book called "Kentucky Place Names" I greatly appreciate any information given or shared, and thank you for you time & efforts. > Laura Krajnak >
