    1. California Payne Resources

    3. Does anyone know of a good resource for Payne's in California around the late 1890's through 1920? Many of you know that I am trying to get information beyond my ggrandfather, John Thomas Payne, who died in Savanah, Ga. around 1918. So far, I have focused on the Paynes in that region at that time, and have not come up any leads. Last weekend I was talking to my mother, and she remembered a discussion years ago that indicates that after John Thomas died, his parent tried to acquire custody of his oldest son, Edwin Earl. Mary Pearl, John's widow, refused, even though she was very poor at the time. Mom seemed to recall the comment that the elder Paynes had travelled from California, they were wealthy, and 'something about raising horses'. Does this trigger anything with anyone? Was the Del Mar Racegrounds around back then? Race horses are purely a guess; I have no idea what breed or for what purpose they may have been raced. Best regards, Frank L.
