Although I would _never_ advocate a flame war, if someone says something particularly bothersome, you could do what my friends and I do: we take the most absurd postition possible. For example: one of my friends detests abortion debates, so he always says, "It is a tragedy when any fetus is carried to term." That usually stops people cold in their tracks.
