This is my first attempt at using the Payne mailing list in an endeavor to hurdle the "brick wall" that every genealogist seems to have. I am trying to find a dedicated source that would prove my great-great-great-grandfather, Joseph Payne, was the son of Smith Payne and Lydia Brockway. My Joseph Payne was born about August 1788 in Rensselaer County, New York. He married Phebe Palmer, born 10 March 1792, daughter of Fenner Palmer and Elizabeth Hoag. Joseph and Phebe farmed and raised their family in Barre, Orleans County, New York until Phebe's death on 26 November 1860. Joseph died 27 February 1867 at Lockport, Niagara County, New York. I know that Smith Payne had the following sons, Amaziah, Nathaniel, Smith Jr., Jira, Joseph and Abram W. Any assistance in proving both Joseph Payne's are one and the same would be greatly appreciated.
