I do family research on the Payne family identified in the book, "The Paynes of Virginia," by Col. Boothe, e.g., the John Payne (b 1615 in England) family. One of my ancestors' brothers got into a fight with George Washington in 1755 in Alexandria, VA and became a close friend of Washington's and Commissary General of the Continental Army. There is a new book, "The Fabulous History of the Dismal Swamp Company: A Story of George Washington's Times" by Charles Royster, Knopf 1999.
