Hi, I have found this marriage information online about my 3rd great grandfather, William J. Payne and my grandmother, Lavina, and wonder if it's worth sharing? Also have found some Census information on the Indiana Paynes. If anyone should know anything at all about my William J. Payne and his wife Lavina, please contact me. All help is much appreciated. Thanks. Sincerely, Sondra Sklong1@aol.com ---------------------------> Indiana State Library Genealogy Division "N - O - P - Q - R" Indiana Marriages Through 1850 ------------------------------------------- Last Name, Bride or Groom: PAYNE First Name, Bride or Groom: WILLIAM J Last Name, Spouse: STONE First Name, Spouse: LAVINA County : Franklin (Indiana) Date : 5/5/1838 Remarks: URL: http://www.statelib.lib.in.us/tango3/marriage/n-o-p-q-r.taf?_function=detail&L ayout_0_uid1=45194&_UserReference=BA514228922DE94ABD3854C3 -------------------------> I don't have much on my line of Paynes, except that Wm. J. Payne was born in VA and was 50 years of age according to an 1850 Census, of District #97, Rush Co, IN, Sept. 11, 1850. He is also listed as a Farmer. (Wm. J. Payne is also listed in the IN 1860 Census, now aged 60, as having been born in VA.) Lavina, his wife, age 32, born PA. Their children are listed as: Edwin - 10 years. (IN 1860 Census it looks like the first name could be short for Edward.) Mary J (Jane, my 2nd great grandmother) - 7 years - she married White Brown Morris. Angelina or Angeline - 6 years Josephine - can't read age Alvin (?) - name, age & sex not clear. (However, in the 1860 Census of Rush Co., IN, it appears to be written as Alvin, but listed as a male - 10 years.) All of the children were born in IN. I did not find my William J. Payne in the Rush Co. 1870 Census, so unless he moved to another county, he must have passed away sometime during those 10 years. I did find his son, Alvin Payne, Farmer, age 20, born IN, listed in the Rushville Twp., Rush Co., July 30, 1870 Census living with Lavina, age 53, Keeping house, born in PA and her husband, Thomas Jemison, age 64, born KY. Also living with them is Anna Morris, age 12, at school, born IN. There is a connection between my Payne family and the Morris family because of the marriage of my Mary Jane Payne marrying White Brown Morris, so having an Anna Morris living with living with Lavina (Payne) Jemison doesn't seem uncommon to me. I do not know how she is related at this point. In the Rushville Twp., Rush Co., IN July 18, 1870 Census I found a Edward Payne, age 29, bank cashier and his wife, Fannie, age 21, occupation as Boarding. In the Aug. 26, 1850 Census of District #97, Rush Co., IN, there is a Thomas Payne, age 35, Farmer, born in VA. Also in the same 1850 Census and District there is a Mary Payne, age 53. Under her name there are: Robert - age 18 Burns (?) - age 16, male Sarah - 14 Jefferson - 11 In a very early census of Franklin Twp., IN (didn't realized that I didn't get the year printed, sorry) where they only list head of household, it shows a J. W.(or H.) Payne.
