John-- Thanks for your note. I suspect that my Paynes may be related to this Reuben Payne, if only because of the occurance of "Harrison" as a middle name in both families. However, I can't prove it. I can say, with confidence, that Col. Brooke Payne did not get the details of this family correct. The census shows that William Harrison Payne, son of Reuben, was almost 20 years younger than Col. Payne believed. Also, an examination of the marriage records for Rockingham and Orange Co's shows that Reuben had one or more daughters not listed by Col. Payne. There may have been additional sons, as well.
