Capt. WILLIAM PAYNE: resident of Fauquier; aged 78; was living in town of Falmoutht, Stafford cty, Va., in 1776 and had the comm.. of a militia company. Continued to live there from 1776 - 1780 and to command same company. In 1780 removed to Westmoreland and was made Captain of company of militia, and was at the siege of Yorktown..."I have a letter of invitation requiresting me to meet General Lafayette, on which I am addressed as Captain and styled his Brother in Arms"....also another from citizens of Fauquier. Was born in Westmoreland, 1755. Court is of opinion he was a Captain in the Rev. service.
