He married Hannah Adlam in 1803 and they had seven children. His wife and two children died in England. James came to America in 1842, bringing his 5 remaining children and his sister Anna. He settled in Carrol county, Illinois, where he married Hannah Penny (or Perry) in 1853. He died in 1884. His descendants lived in Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota and elsewhere. They are the parents of twelve children, the first eight being born at New Garden. Little is known of Josiah and Martha's nativity other than they probably were born in England. Josiah and Martha were Quakers of record. The family seems to have relocated to property in both Chester and Lancaster counties on Octorara Creek about one mile above the Maryland line. descendants settled in Tennessee, Ohio, Virginia and elsewhere.
