He was a descendant of one Richard Payne who was born ca. 1633 in Northumberland Co., VA. Sanford married Elizabeth Turley sometime prior to the year 1800. They lived in VA and were the parents of five children. Descendants lived primarily in VA. Patti's parents were Catherine Hanley and William R. Payne. Patti's grandfather, William Sherman Payne (1869-1952) married Cora Vera Ripley in 1894. Their ancestors came mainly from England and Ireland, and settled in Maine, Massachusetts, and New York in the 1600-1700's. One ancestor was Joseph Payne (1768-1809) and his wife Cynthia Osborn (1774-1821), who purchased land in New York from Peter and Massey Payn. During the 1800's, some families moved to Ontario (Canada), and to Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsyvania, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin. Later descendants and relatives also lived in Germany, Sweden, California, Minnesota, New Mexico, South Dakota, Utah, Virginia and elsewhere. Some McCann relatives chose to go by the surname Atwood. Also includes Payn as a variant spelling. Evan Pain or Payne (ca. 1760-ca. 1808) married Margaret Baker about 1781, and moved from Hardy County Virginia (now West Virginia) to Licking County Ohio in 1803. John Spencer Payne (1828-1903), a grandson of Evan, married Anna Maria Harris in 1852, and also lived in Licking County Ohio. Descenddants and relatives of Evan lived in Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and elsewhere.
