He migrated to Lawrence County, Indiana, with his brothers and sisters and later moved to Sullivan County, Indiana. He married Mary Zinc (1821-1897) in 1839 at Hymera, Indiana. They settled on a farm near Hymera. They had four sons, 1840-1851. Descendants listed lived in Indiana and elsewhere. His son, Solomon C. Payne, was born in Rowan County, North Carolina, in 1830. He served in the war with Mexico and the Civil War. He married twice and was the father of two daughters.
