Hi- I am fortunate enough to live close enough to UVA that I have seen the files. They are 'housed' in about 22 boxes. I don't remember seeing his manuscript but just notes and more importantly, all the correspondence from the Paynes he wrote to. They charge .25 per copy + $6.00 handling fee + shipping (mine was 2.44 for 39 pgs). It takes about 3 weeks to get the pages. I had picked out the ones I wanted and had them copied. I would guess that it might take longer to get if they have to pull them. Also, I found items about my Paynes in several boxes so you may not get everything there is without visiting. If you do not live in Virginia the fee is somewhat greater. I wanted a will and I live in NC the fee for the two pages was $30.00. Residents of VA only pay a photocopying charge and shipping.
