    3. Colonial Families of the United States, vol. I states that Martha Dandridge (b. 20 Sep 1748, d. 28 Sep 1791) of Hanover County, Va., married in 1769, ARCHER PAYNE (b. 1748). On 7 Dec 1797, Archer married 2nd, Betsy Brooks. Archer was the son of John Payne (1713-1784) of Goochland County, by his wife Jean Archer. Archer's brother's were also connected to the Dandridge's. Philip Payne, Sr. (1760-1840), married 13 Nov 1783, Elizabeth Dandridge; and George Woodson Payne married about 1787, Mary Claiborne Dandridge. All of these Dandridge's were daughter's of Colonel Nathaniel West Dandridge (7 Sep 1729-16 Jan 1786) of "Elsing Green," King William County, who married 18 Jun 1747 in Hanover County, Dorothea Spotswood (1732-25 Sep 1773). There are a couple of other things to mention. Dolley Payne, wife of President James Madison, was the sister of Lucy Payne who married in 1793, George Steptoe Washington. He was the nephew of President George Washington who had married Martha Dandridge, former wife of Daniel Parke Custis. Martha was therefore a cousin of the Dandridge daughter's above who all married Payne's. To give some indication of how closely the Payne's/Spotswood/Dandridge families had become, a look at the children of Archer and Martha is all that is necessary. They included: Jane Spotswood Payne John Robert Dandridge Payne Anne Spotswood Payne Dorothea Dandridge Payne Alexander Spotswood Payne And- I can't help but include this fact while on the subject. Another sister of the Dandridge/Payne girls above, Dorothea Spotswood (Dolley) Dandridge, was the wife of Gov. Patrick Henry, whom she married 9 Oct 1777 after a "hurriedly arranged" marriage. She had run off with John Paul Jones, whom her parents circle had a dislike for as they considered him to be a rouge pirate and smuggler. In any case, Patrick Henry and Dolley were the grandparents of Sarah Winston Henry, the wife of Dr. George Cabell Carrington, who was the great-grandfather of my father-in-law, Charles Craddock Carrington. Happy New Year! Patrick
