A kind resident of the area has discovered several graves and we need to see if we can locate ancestors if we can. Please help me to distribute this information or let me know if any of the names ring bells. I have requested additional details on dates and names which would be a big help. If I receive more information I will be passing that along as well. Thank you! Patrick http://papayne.rootsweb.com >Dear Sir, > I am not a member of the Payne family. 2. Sandra Brandt wrote: << I only know that our Wayne Co. IL. Payne ancestor, Thomas, was b. in 1808 in N.C. >> Hi Sandra, Just grasping at straws here... My earliest known PAYNE relative is Joseph PAYNE, born about 1803 in (perhaps Mecklenburg Co.) North Carolina. I have no early info about him other than 1850 Census data and the fact that his two sons said they were born in Mecklenburg Co., NC. Wonder if your Thomas may have had a brother Joseph? Thanks for any help you may be able to give. Sally TWEED BAUGHN cbaughn@aol.com

    1. Origin of Payne
    2. I read somewhere that Payne came from the word pagan in Britain and stems from those people who lived in isolated areas and didn't become christianized as early as those in more populated centers. I've never done any research on this but it seemed logical to me. Probably there are many separate origins of the name. DJ

    3. I would like to comment.. Yes the very early DAR applications were not always reliable but any after about 1960 are much better. You had to supply proof and in many cases the old proof was proved unreliable. In the first years, everyone wanted to be a DAR member. Thanks in advance, Peggy Hornick Iowa pegpowel@netins.net ---------- Ancestry.com added three books to their DAR database and threw the whole thing (all 140 books) open to the world to search for free for 10 days. The 10 days started before today, so hurry. The URL is http://www.ancestry.com/ancestry/search/3174.htm I found it did best with two names; the search window uses an implied "AND". That is, if you enter "Thomas Burnham" (Without the quotes) you get all the entries that contain "Thomas" and "Burnham". So, you'd get an entry that has "Joseph Thomas" and "George Burnham" as well as the one with "Thomas Burnham". If you enter just "Thomas" you'll get a gazillion hits. Also, I've been warned that early DAR applications could be suspect. About all you really had to prove was that you were a white woman with clean fingernails who could show up sober to afternoon meetings. Take everything you find as a clue to further research. The DAR will send you a copy of the original application for $5. It may have birth dates, birth places, and citations.

    1. California Payne Resources
    2. Frank Healy
    3. Does anyone know of a good resource for Payne's in California around the late 1890's through 1920? Many of you know that I am trying to get information beyond my ggrandfather, John Thomas Payne, who died in Savanah, Ga. around 1918. So far, I have focused on the Paynes in that region at that time, and have not come up any leads. Last weekend I was talking to my mother, and she remembered a discussion years ago that indicates that after John Thomas died, his parent tried to acquire custody of his oldest son, Edwin Earl. Mary Pearl, John's widow, refused, even though she was very poor at the time. Mom seemed to recall the comment that the elder Paynes had travelled from California, they were wealthy, and 'something about raising horses'. Does this trigger anything with anyone? Was the Del Mar Racegrounds around back then? Race horses are purely a guess; I have no idea what breed or for what purpose they may have been raced. Best regards, Frank L.
