SEARCH TIP FAMILY TREE RESEARCH CENTER: WAR OF 1812 - TIP FOR SEARCHING THE SITE http://www.sierra.com/sierrahome/familytree/records/w1812/list/1,2824,00.ht WAR of 1812 SITE: I have discovered a trick. Since the site only displays the first 100 names and then one has to know the exact first name in searching, run the alphabet - as the initial only. If there are more than 100 within any letter of the alphabet - run the alphabet with the second or third letter wherever the list ends on the first name. This method should bring everyone up without knowing any first names. Hope this is clear. It worked for me. Good Luck. Nola Payne

I don't know if this fellow belongs to any of you. I just happened to notice this in the 12 June 1884 Lawrence Co (MO) Chieftain. "John W PAYNE, a well known lawyer and politician of this co before the war, and well known to our old citizens, arrived last Tuesday on a visit with W.A. McCanse. Mr Payne is now residing at Dallas, Texas andis one of the prominent Greenbackers of the state." Sarah
My relative went from TN to KY when all of his kin folks or traveling companions died of a fever. He was taken in by neighbors and perhaps given the name of Payne at that time. Does anybody have an unusual census record of a James suddenly appearing?
thank you

(Just a random thought) I don't know about the rest of you, but my maternal ancestry line is difficult to research. Mostly I get a bunch of first names only. The only reason I bring this up is that the only ancestry we are truely sure of is the maternal line. Which is not even true in the case that our ancestor is adopted, but an adoption is not shown in any records, but I'll leave that aside for a minute. Does anyone make any accounting for the fact that _many_ women have affairs and children born in wedlock might have a different father than appears on the birth certificate? I know this is probably a touchy subject and it is probably impossible to know whether this is the case or not, but any thoughts? I am curious because I know someone who claims to be descendant from some guy in the 1300's. Assuming that her research is correct and that her line follows the men all the way back to this guy and assuming that 1% of birth certificate fathers are truly not the biological fathers, it is easy to come up with the probability that she is really a descendant of this person. Does anyone know any random facts about this subject? I would love to hear about it. BTW, I read that in Ancient Egypt, they followed the mother's line for that reason. Thanks in advance. Subscribe I am looking for information on Jonathon Payne. He was a Baptist minister in Edwards N.Y. In 1820 he moved to St. Lawerence CO. N.Y. He might have had a brother, Nehimah and a sister, Rachel. I am looking for the parents of Stephen Payne born July 11,1811 in N.Y. Stephen married Sarah Bristol also born N.Y. Any help would be great. I am really stuck. Barbara Hinz, Central Point, Oregon bhinz@internetcds.com
Megan & List, An issue of "Natural History" within the last 5 or 6 years had an article on the "discovery" by English birdwatchers that, when they actually started watching for female bird hanky-panky (taking off & leaving the eggs unprotected), they actually caught them at it! Just shocked the Brits. Apparently it was the evolutionary behavior pattern of "not keeping all your eggs in one basket." There's also been a "reported in the regular papers" of a British Health Services study from one midland town that demonstrated that in married & intact multi-children households significantly over 1% of the children were not the offspring of the father. Just shocked the Brits. So, while you may be able to actually prove "relationships" since 1300 AD (& if you're the Augustan Society to 1300 BC as well), that certainly doesn't mean the biological interconnection is always true. It just means the relationship is, and that's the human point of it. Just remember the T. Jefferson/Sally Heminges story from last summer! Also check out the fun but serious history by Roger Thomson, Sex in Middlesex: Popular Mores in a Massachusetts County, 1632-1690. Guaranted to raise a smile! hi. my dad (James L. Payne, from KY, now in TX) tells me that his grandfather was named William Payne and that William Payne came to KY from Whitewright, Tx. i suspect that William Payne left TX for KY because he was from KY. i am just getting started in this so i do not know much more. Looking at the map Palmer appears to be about 30 miles south of Dallas and Whitewright appears to be about 50 miles or so north of Dallas in Sherman County. perhaps there is a connection. i will forward the email to my dad and his cousin and see what they think. patti payne lockhart, texas
