Have you been able to find a Will for Richard Payne, son of John Payne and Margaret of Old Rappahannonck? I am trying to find the father of William Payne m. Elizabeth Pope (Yeocommoco) Westmoreland County. I have not been able to connect him to the Old Rappa Paynes (John & Margaret). There was a John Payne m. Milicent who was in Northumberland/ Westmoreland from abt 1651 until 1668 when he died. This John Paine owned land adjacent to Richard Lee, and William Payne of Yeocommoco owned land on the other side of Richard Lee. They had one connection, and that was Richard Lee. John Payne was a tenant of Richard Lee, and William Payne mentioned Richard Lee in his Will and made Richard Lee the guardian of his daughter, Ann. Thank you for the Dolly Madison info, also. If one ever wants ones Genealogy done for Free, become a President (-:) !!!! There are many sites out there in cyberworld, ie, "Genealogies of the U.S. Presidents" , and more info in Libraries on their Genealogies. I just did a quick cyber-tour on Dolley to get this on her....Born 20 May 1768 in GUILFORD CO., NC. Married first to TODD, had one TODD child. Married next to JAMES MADISON (4th President 1809-1817). Married 15 Sept 1794 in Harewood, Nr Charles Town, VA. Dolley died 12 July 1849 in Wash DC, buried in Montpelier, Orange Co, VA. Another site list her parents as JOHN PAYNE JR. & MARY COLE. Hope this helps some. Janet & The PaynePack successwoods@thegrid.net
Nancy, Gary Boyd Roberts has been running articles on ancestral lines of famous people, including wives of presidents such as Dolley Madison, in the pages of the NEHGS' publication "NEXUS". Your local library or genealogy society might have them. Another public library reference book, William A. DeGregorio, "The Complete Book of U. S. Presidents", Dembner Books 1984, states on p. 58 she was born 29 May 1768 at the New Garden Quaker settlement in North Carolina where her parents, John Payne and Mary Coles Payne, lived briefly. However, she spent her early years mostly on the family plantation in Goochland, VA. Her father, a devout Quaker convert, later freed his slaves, sold the plantation and moved the family to Philadelphia "where he went bankrupt as a starch manufacturer." The stuff you can find in the public library! There may be a Dolley Madison society with a webpage. The US Mint earlier this year produced a special commemorative coin in proof silver for some such society. As there's already one for her husband James Madison, you can actually get the couple "together again"! Would anyone have information on the Parents of Dolly Payne Todd Madison? She was the daughter of John Payne & Mary Coles of Hanover County, VA. John and Mary were married abt. 1661 in Hanover County, VA. They later moved to NC where Dolly was born (abt. 1668). I am researching the Paynes of the Northern Neck, and have found a William Payne of Westmoreland m. Elizabeth Harness Payne. William was the son of John Paine and Elizabeth ? of Westmoreland. After the death of William Payne, Elizabeth Harness Payne moved to Hanover COunty, VA. (abt. 1723). I am wondering if John Payne, father of Dolly Madison, was a son or grandson of William Payne & Elizabeth Harness Payne. I am glad to share information. Thank you, Nancy Norman

The Centre in Islington is known as the "Family Records Centre". In addition to births, marriages and deaths, it also has census records. (Because of the 100 year rule, the latest available census is 1891) The Public Records Office is at Kew. Hi Again, The Morman Genealogy search site has your Jeremiah...it is the sameone in Washington County, Indiana, although the LDS site says he was born Pennsylvania. It is says his father was SAMUEL PAINE, born about 1740, probably Pennsylvania, who died December 26, 1818 in Butler, Penn, He married Mary Stillwell, born before 1747 in Pennsylvania, died after 1813, Preble, Butler, Ohio. These are the children listed: Mariam Born 22 March 1778, possily Bedford Pennsylvania. Died 1858, Brownsville Township, Union, Indiana. Buried Richmond, Wayne Indiana, elkhorn Cemetery, Miriam born about 1776, probably Pennsylvania. Elijah Born about 1785, probably Pennsylvania, Bedford. Died, 1824-26. Jonathan Born 1770, Pennsylvania Jeremiah About 1769, Pennsylvania. Died February 1, 1861, Washington, Indiana John Born 1771 Pennsylvania Isaac Born 1774 Bedford, Pa. William born about 1776, Bedford Pa. Mary, Born 4, December, 1768, Nelson Kentucky Died 14 December 1870 Grant Indiana Elias Payne born about 1782, possibly Bedford, Pa. Died 13 September, 1812, Pidgeon Roost, Vienna, Indiana. Rebecca Born 1784 Possible Bedford, Pa. This gives you quite a lot of new infomation to explore! Cissie Payne
Laura, A Jeramiah Payne appears on the 1850 Indiana census for Washington County, Franklin Township. I suspect this is your Jerremiah: Here is the information: JEREMIAH PAYNE AGE 79 (born 1771) Born MARYLAND SARAH WIFE AGE 70 BORN PENNSYLVANIA CHRISTIANA DAUGHTER 27 BORN INDIANA He is not on the 1810 census index, but appears on the 1820 in Clark County. Given that the birthdate is very near to your Jeremiah and the wife's name is Sarah, it appears likely that this is your family. There are other PAYNES in Washington County, Franklin Township, some of whom are undoubtedly his grown children. Go to Family Tree Maker's Genealogy Site: Genealogy Help and Resources, scroll to the bottom of the oage, click on BOOKS, and scroll to RECORDS on the right hand side. CLICK on this. It will various census's, by state. Click on INDIANA, and then click on 1850, and hit FIRST PAGE OF BOOK, and SEARCH, and enter Jeremiah Paine. You will get his listing in the index, and if you click to the right of that, you will get the actual census microfilm. Good Luck. Cissie Payne
http://www.cohsoft.com.au/afhc/country.html#uk This site led me to English ones. The best place to start might be the Public Records office in Islington London. I think they keep details of marriages, deaths etc. If you need any further help, email me privately and I will dig out some more sites as I am in London so its pretty easy for me. Hope you progress well. Glynice Smith (mother Clarice May Payne of Brighton, Sussex, England)
Civil Registration started in England in 1837, so there will be no birth certificate for someone born in 1828. However, if you know the parish in which he was born, there is a good chance that he was baptised and he will appear in the Baptism Register. These are usually held in the County Records Office. Registers give details of parents. As you are presumably in the US, a good place to start looking would be in the IGI which should be available to you relatively easily. For England it is organised by county which narrows the field! If he emigrated, he might have come to the US with his parents, in which case you might be able to find him on passenger lists which are held at the Public Records Office at Kew (near London). A bit of a long shot unless you know when he emigrated. Try looking at www.pro.gov.uk to see if there is anything on their web site about emigrants. Hope this helps. I am very new at this genealogical searching and this is my first inquiry so please forgive any errors or presumptions on my part. :) I am looking for the parents or any information regarding my ancestor Jeremiah Payne. I have traced my history to him & then I am not finding any more info. I know that he and his brother Elias Payne moved from KY to Indiana and settled at Pidgeon Roost. (Near present day Vienna or Scottsburg IN.) There was a massacre in approx. 1812 and Elias & his entire family where killed. Jeremiah and his family survived. It is from he (Jeremiah) that I am descended. I know that he was born at Shelby,Kentucky (not Shelbyville KY) about 1773 and married Sallie "Sarah" McCoy on May 9th 1797. I do not have his date of death. I know that he had at least one brother named Elias who was perhaps married to a woman with the maiden name of Bridgewater(?) and they had approx. 7 children. This fact is mentioned an account by the Collins Family of the Pidgeon Roost Massacre . It is in book form. There are also several other accounts. What I am looking for is information on the parents of Jeremiah & Elias or any information which may help me in locating this information. Or where this branch of the family came from before settling in Shelby,KY. (Family tradition says they came form Virginia. so far family history has proven true, but I know that it cannot be totally trusted. I contacted a KY library & was told that there did exist a settlement called Shelby, Ky. in what is now Pike Co. This information was found in a book called "Kentucky Place Names" I greatly appreciate any information given or shared, and thank you for you time & efforts. Laura Krajnak
Cornell University has put the ENTIRE "War of the Rebellion" on the internet!!! Over 60 volumes!!! It includes scanned images of reports, correspondence, seizures of Southern property, etc. sent to the War Dept. during the Civil War. It includes both Union and Confederate accounts. Since the site only displays the first 100 names and then one has to know the exact first name in searching, run the alphabet - as the initial only. If there are more than 100 within any letter of the alphabet - run the alphabet with the second or third letter wherever the list ends on the first name. This method should bring everyone up without knowing any first names. Hope this is clear. It worked for me. Good Luck.
