    3. Hello I'm trying to find out some information about James Alexander Payne who lived at Buckhom Plantation, Richland Parish, Louisiana some time before, and maybe after 1901. His father was Richard Payne from Baschurch, England and he died in 1876 at Houston Plantation, Tallulah Station, Madison Parish, Louisiana. This is the only information I have on either of them. If anybody knows anything about the above I would be very grateful to hear from them. Thank you in advance. Fiona Harris Fiona.C.Harris@btinternet.com

    2. Jeanette wheeler
    3. Hi list, I think I have finally found additional information on my gggrandfather, Charles Emanuel Payne. We knew from census info that he had been in the Union Army and enlisted in Indianapolis Ind. I recently subscribed to the HDS civil war page and found one Charles E.Payne who enlisted into 135th infantry on 5-23-1864 and mustered out on 9-29-1864 at Indianapolis. He listed his residence as Boone County Indiana, the only other Payne in Boone County to enlist was a John F Payne enlisted 9-18-1861 and was mustered into Co. A of the 10th infantry, mustered out 9-19-1864 at Indianapolis. He was reported as wounded but no info as to where or when. Does anyone know anything about the Paynes in Boone County? Also was there a township in Cass county named Boone? Any information would be appreciated

    3. I'm still looking for Joseph Payne b.1821 in Wayne County, VA, who married Margery Ann Cady in Lawrence County, Ohio 14 Oct 1838. I found a Joseph Payne living in Lawrence County, Ohio, but he is the wrong one. I thought I'd pass the data on. Page 391, Lawrence Co. Ohio 1850 census, Schedule "L". Free inhabitants of Union Township, enumerated on 2nd August 1850: Dwelling [119, 189, 14.9 - take your pick] Family 151: Mansfield Peters, age 24, male, occ. laborer Ellen Peters, age 72, female Thomas Peters, age 2, male Anna Peters, age 3/12 [or 9/12], female Mary Payne, age 55, female Joseph Payne, age 22, male, laborer Philem [Phlem] Payne, age 19, laborer All 7 have "m" in the "Color" box, where the choices are "White", "Black" and "Mulatto". All three Paynes have what looks like "Va" in the "Place of birth" box. Mansfield and Ellen have what might be a "Va" in theirs, and the two peters children what looks like an "O" for "Ohio". The penmanship is clear but the ink has faded, and the microfilm from which the copy was made is very scratched. The Lawrence County Ohio US Gen Web site is linked to a rare gem - the Lawrence Co. Register. the LC Genealogical society and the library special collections staff there joined forces. The combined volunteers spend thousands of hours indexing the special collections by name. They have the standard stuff - obits, census, marriages, births, deaths - but they are INDEXED by name, with references. So, supposing your ancestor is Mortimer Periwinkle, you look him up, find his obit was in the 01 April 1911 issue of the Lawrence Co. Gazette, then write to the library, asking for a copy. They have a very nominal charge - $3 for the first ten lookups and copies. >From their end, they no longer have to write to people saying they really can't wade through eight years of microfilm looking for someone who probably died between 1888 and 1896. From our end, we can poke through their indexes from the comfort of our home, in our pajamas, then send for exactly the copies we need. (In my case, it wasn't the copy I needed, but hey, it was a close thing.) The web site is the best I've seen at the county level; it is a rare gem. Any of you who belong to county genealogical societies and have three or four thousand volunteer-hours to spare (don't we wish!!) would do well to use it as an example.

    3. I just returned from Washington County, Indiana, where I visited the graves of Jeremiah Payne and Sarah McCoy Payne. I descend from them through their son William who married Elizabeth Dawalt. Jeremiah went by "Jerry". He was born in 1769 in either Pennsylvania or Maryland, according to information I found in Indiana, but I'm not really sure. He died February 1, 1861 in at his home near Harristown, Indiana in Washington County. He and Sarah (who went by "Sally") are buried in the Old Hebron Cemetery, which is unfortunately not very well maintained. I also visited the Pigeon Roost site. There is a mass grave there where Mrs. Elias Payne and the seven Payne children are buried along with some of the Collings family. It was a very sobering experience. Information I received in Indiana indicated that Jeremiah's parents were Samuel Payne and Mary Stillwell. Samuel Payne lived in Springhill Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania about 1772-1795. During the Revolutionary War he served as a Second Lieutenant under Colen George Ashman with the 2nd Battalion, 7th Company. The family moved to Nelson County, Kentucky, where they lived from about 1796 to 1804. Samuel owned 170-200 acres at Cox's Creek. they moved to Butler County, Ohio, where they lived from about 1805 to 1828. ---------- > From: LSK@GDM.com > To: PAYNE-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: any info on Jeremiah Payne -Payne's of Pidgeon Roost Massacre > Date: Thursday, October 07, 1999 2:41 PM > > I am very new at this genealogical searching and this is my first inquiry so please forgive any errors or presumptions on my part. :) I am looking for the parents or any information regarding my ancestor Jeremiah Payne. I have traced my history to him & then I am not finding any more info. > > I know that he and his brother Elias Payne moved from KY to Indiana and settled at Pidgeon Roost. (Near present day Vienna or Scottsburg IN.) There was a massacre in approx. 1812 and Elias & his entire family where killed. Jeremiah and his family survived. It is from he (Jeremiah) that I am descended. I know that he was born at Shelby,Kentucky (not Shelbyville KY) about 1773 and married Sallie "Sarah" McCoy on May 9th 1797. I do not have his date of death. I know that he had at least one brother named Elias who was perhaps married to a woman with the maiden name of Bridgewater(?) and they had approx. 7 children. This fact is mentioned an account by the Collins Family of the Pidgeon Roost Massacre . It is in book form. There are also several other accounts. > > What I am looking for is information on the parents of Jeremiah & Elias or any information which may help me in locating this information. Or where this branch of the family came from before settling in Shelby,KY. (Family tradition says they came form Virginia. so far family history has proven true, but I know that it cannot be totally trusted. I contacted a KY library & was told that there did exist a settlement called Shelby, Ky. in what is now Pike Co. This information was found in a book called "Kentucky Place Names" I greatly appreciate any information given or shared, and thank you for you time & efforts. > Laura Krajnak >

He was born in Tenn 1824. He died 1897 of March in Belton Bell Co. She was born in Louisiana Jan 1838. Tx. I don't know when she died, but I do know it was after 1913 because of the history I have. My question is: When did he get to TX? Where did She die and when? I did find a County with a J.G. Payne in the republic Of Texas Poll roll 1846 in the county of Cherokee. How do I find this out for sure? I am so very sorry this is so long. But as the rest of you, I want to find my family. And I feel I have hit a BIG BRICK WALL. Any help, suggestions are welcomed. 3. I have a George Payne born March 1795 in GA, according to 2 census(is plural-censi or censuses?) In one census he was called Robert. I first find him in the Green Co KY tax lists in 1817. Before that there was a Samuel for 3 yrs. Geo and Joseph are on the 1843 Hart Co. KY tax lists. Altho a Joseph is mentioned in a family letter, I don't know the relationship. Geo has 3 children by his first wife(unk.) Naomi b ca 1818, Elizabeth b ca 1823-28, and Samuel Scott b 1829. The first wife died ca 1830, possibly in IL. Geo has no parents and no siblings and he doesn't seem to be related to any Payne's in that area of KY. No one seems to have a gap in their tree about 1795! I wondered if he really was born in GA--maybe he was brought up there. Sarah HELP!
