I have written before about John Payne. I have more information that someone might recognize. He had a daughter that he named America Payne. I found another America Payne born in the late 1700's that she may have been named after. Does anyone recognize this family? I tried several, dealing with late 19th/early 20th century databases, such as the WWI Civilian Draft Registrations and the Vietnam Casualty Index; these two at least gave me full details. Then just for fun I tried a couple of the Revolutionary War databases, but only for an indication of whether my surnames had any hits. I went no further. I've just tried the Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots, and got the same message as you, Ted. Not a very good way of advertising, if you ask me! I clicked on the link. I selected "Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots", one of the data bases. I entered "Payne" in the search engine. I got 22 hits. When I clicked on "View Search Results" I got the message "The Database you requested is available only to members." So, until you try to see anything, it looks open; at least the DB on Revolutionary War graves. Peter Wyant, which data base did you use, just out of curiosity?
I tried and tho' it didn't have what I was looking for it is open. ----- Original Message ----- From: Sherry Davis-Ellis <bluefairies@uswest.net> To: <PAYNE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 14, 1999 12:05 PM Subject: Re: PAYNE-D Digest V99 #245 > Hello, > I have tried the site > http://www.ancestry.com/dailynews/militaryDBs.htm > and you have to be a member. I am looking for information on John Payne. John married Susan Eaton in Williamson Co., TN and had several children. He later married Susan Parrish. They are listed in the 1850 census in Dyer Co., TN. John died in 1855. I have just received a copy of his will, but I am searching for his parents and his marriage date to Susan Parrish. I have the information on his children. In Belgium and the Netherlands you can also find the the name PIEN, even VANDEPIENE. Maybe the name Pien in Germany is coming from the name of the river PEENE near PEENEMüNDE. The original name off the family in France is DE PIENNES. This family is related with the family "de Saint-Omer". Guilliaume de Saint-Omer is the lord off Piennes and the ancestor off the family Peene in Belgium, the Netherlands and Great-Brittain. I can't prove that Huges de PAYEN(de PAYNE) and Godfrey de Saint-Omer are from the same family. Between the 11th and the 16th century we find a lot off different spellings off the name in Flanders (de piennes, peene, pene, vanpeene, dupeene, vandepeene, pain, payne, pein, pine, pain). In the area off Ypres the prononiciation off "PEENE" is "Piènne". I pronounce the "EE" like in the french word "Thé" (I don't think there's an English word that gives the same prononciation, every word with "EE" in English I know is pronounced "IE". The name PEENE was in the 12th century a global name for 'river'. That's the reason why you find the name in Germany, France, Norway. Maybe there was also a river Peene in Kent (UK) because we find there also the village PEENE near Folkestone. IN THE LOW foothills of the Cascades, situated behind the Northwest's tallest dam, lie the greenish-blue waters of Riffe Lake. Nearby hills, with their checkerboard pattern of farms, keep the lake company, as does Mt. St. Helens, 25 miles to the southeast. Like other reservoirs, Riffe Lake is a haven for people who enjoy fishing, wterskiing, sailing and camping. But Riffe Lake is more than just a recreational hot spot. It is a lake with a story beneath its waters. When workers plugged the dam back in 1968, the rising waters of the Cowlitz River flooded the last remains of the town of Riffe and left only a ripple of memories behind. It all began in the fall of l893, when a party of more than 60 Appalachian hllbillies led by Floyd Riffe, A Southern Baptist minister, traveled eight days in a boxcar from West Virginia to Chehalis. A month later part of the group forged 40 miles east with horse and wagon to the old Bodiford homestead on the Cowlitz. There, Floyd Riffe purchased 160 acres from the widowed Mrs. Bodiford, and the community of Riffe was born. The early settlers had left the Appalachian Mountains because the water there was bad and the ground so rocky that dirt had ro be carried in to cover hills of corn. Out west in the Cascade foothills they found the water clear and clean and the earth rich. Due to its isolation, Riffe's early settleers tended to be self-reliant and jacks-of-all-trades. Floyd Riffe was no excepton, He was a farmer, loggeer, minister, doctor (though unlicensed) and the leader of the community. He also established the first Riffe Post Office in his home and served as its postmaster until 1904. A grandson, Glen Schwartz of Mossyrock, remembers his grandfather's days as the area's only medical practitioner. "Anybody who got sick called Granddad Riffe. He had a black satchel and a tiny white pill that he used as a painkiller. He'd get on horseback and go see the person," Schwartz says. During the early part of the century and for the most part untiil the 1960s, Riffe was isolated from nearby towns because of the clannish nature of its people. They had transplanted themselves to another part of the world, but little else changed in their lives. They played their music. They hunted and raised crops. They spoke with the accents and slang of their Appalachian homeland. They interrmarried, and had large families. "Eveeryone married his neighbor because no one had transportation," says Marjorie Aldrich of Mossyrock, a Lewis County historian. "And in those days there were no birth control pills." ---TO BE CONTINUED-- Surnames: PAYNE,DYER,DEAN,BELCHER,WISER, COTTON;RANKIN,NEFF,LOPER,DEWITT, WOLFE,BUSER,CLOMAN,CULBERT, EDMUNDSON,RIDLEY,DAY,CONGER, POND,FAIRBANKS,ROBINSON,BOWIE, WEBBER,SMALLEY,STROUT, HENDERSON, NORTON,MADDISON,(PTL) Alternate Email Addresses: NLPfromWA@webtv.net, NLP-COLONIES2WA@webtv.net, mompayne2@hotmail.com
