    1. SC/GA PAYNE Corrections
    2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. Just wanted to let ya'll know that I was rechecking my information on the SC/GA PAYNEs and found a mistake in my database. The George I sent information on was the George who married Abraham SHIVER's daughter, Milley. He was married twice and Milley was his much younger second wife. Sarah SHIVER may have been married to George PAYNE Sr. (George's father, who died in 1798 in Kershaw Co., SC). That is one speculation. It is also speculated that she may have been married to Joseph PAYNE, who had extensive land sale dealings with Jacob SHIVER, brother of Sarah. The Abraham mentioned above was also a brother of Sarah's. I hope this isn't just totally confusing. I know it has confused me! But I've gotten used to it with this particular family! :-) Mary Kathryn -- Mary Kathryn Kozy mkozy@attglobal.net My Home Page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~marykozy/ South King Co. Gene. 1. Kershaw Co., SC PAYNEs (GA/AL too!)
    2. Mary Kathryn Kozy
    3. Hi PAYNE researchers! I'm investigating the PAYNE surname in connection with my SHIVER research. I am descended from John & Hannah SHIVER of Kershaw Co., SC. They had 6 sons and 2 daughters. One daughter married George PAYNE of the same area. I have almost no information on their children other than knowing numbers, as they lived during the pre-1850 census time. George and Sarah were born abt. 1770, both in South Carolina. From the 1800 Kershaw Co., SC census it appears that they have 1 boy age 10-16, 3 boys under 10, 1 girl 10-16, and 3 girls under 10 (WOW! 6 children under 10!) By 1810 they have 1 boy under 10, 3 girls under 10, and 1 girl 10-16. In 1820 they were in Laurens Co., GA they have 1 boy 10-16, 1 under 10, and 2 girls under 10. Sarah dies sometime around 1830. The interesting thing about this particular family is that they tended to intermarry VERY heavily, particularly first cousins (I know, I know...). It has been an occasion of note when I've been able to find someone who married someone with a different surname whose mother didn't end up being a SHIVER! (This was most common in the early days of the family, post-Rev. War and up until around the Civil War. It still happened until more recently, but not as often.) There are other PAYNE names that pop up whose children married into the family. Absalom PAYNE of SC, b. 1771/1775 had two children who married SHIVERs, and that's only the ones I know about! :-) I have other records of PAYNE-SHIVER marriages, but can't fit the PAYNEs into any kind of family group. I have recently found 3 researchers working on these lines or ones closely related to them, but I was hoping some others on this list might be as well. Please contact me if you wish to exchange information! Thanks! Doug's Note; I think Thressa J. surname would be Myers, Marrs or Manus. This index was a WPA project back in the 1940's maybe and type written. You need to write to Welch Courthouse and obtain a marriage license. Most of all, be sure and tell them you need parents of the bride and groom. 1. John and Mary Payne
    2. Jill Hagelin
    3. Hi list! Would anyone happen to have any info concerning the ancestry of John Payne and Mary Coles? I found, in a gedcom file, that they had a son named John Coles Payne who married a Mary Isabell Landers. They in turn had a daughter named Mary Jane Payne who married George Cogar. If this is true, then I think that I have linked my Payne line together. Mary Jane was a sister to my gg grandmother Drucilla. Unfortunately, I am unable to find the submitter of the gedcom file, but I am hopeful about this info. I was told that, often, the style of writing back then caused the letters S and L to be similar. Therefore, it would be easy to mistake Landers for Sanders. If someone has any information about this, PLEASE contact me!!!! Thanks, Jill Hagelin
