    1. Re: Hollingshead/Payne
    2. Hi, David: Just wanted to take a minute to clarify something. Harriett and Thomas were the only two offspring of ATW's and Elizabeth Murry. Jane Payne is actually the daughter of ATW and Elizabeth Houston. After ATW died and Elizabeth Houston remarried, she promptly had Jane's name changed to that of her newest husband. I'll have to dig through my records to recall what exactly that name was, but if it is of importance to someone on the list, I'll promptly do that. Robin

    1. Re: Hollingshead/Payne
    2. Hi David, Thanks very much for your interest and help. Good to hear from you. The Payne/Hollinsheads you named are related to Barb and Sue I believe. These Hollingsheads seem to descend from an Israel Hollinshead b Canada 1817, then in IA by at least 1830's , then to Cherokee Co NC in 1850. His wife, Louisa, had been born in NC although I suspect they met and married in IA where their children were born. His appearance in Cherokee Co NC in 1850 when Asa and Nancy are there tweaked my interest but his 1850 NC appearance seems to be his entrance to the Southern states and Asa's wife Nancy was apparently born in the South @ 1814. Those versed in the Hollinshead lines know nothing of Israel. I have traced him back in time as well as forward to some of his descendants and they knew nothing of him either so at least I was able to give them some information on their family. Somehow I seem to be learning about the lines of others and running in place where my own is concerned. Thanks again and Happy Holidays . I noticed in this book, from the same site ( http://members.aol.com/rarebk/booklists.html#old ) there is a chapter devoted in part to the Ayers family. Looks interesting, and also may contain Payne information. South Carolina Indians, Indian Traders, and other Ethnic Connections beginning in 1760. Genealogist and author Theresa Hicks, at age 70, has spent a lifetime researching South Carolina's white Indian connections, resulting in this massively detailed book which has won rave reviews from Southern historians and archivists. If your ancestors are from South Carolina and have possible Indian connections, you'll be interested in this book. A significant contribution is made through her research on Indian traders and their lives, and the 104 page index contains over 17,700 entries, the mass majority being individual names! (hardback, illustrated, 503 pages). Click to read the book's contents page and an example from the index. 1. PAYNE, Gilbert & Wilsonia
    2. Hello everyone! I am looking for information on Gilbert PAYNE, b. 3-1-1912 (location unknown) and d. May, 1976 in Dingess, West Virginia. Married to Wilsonia, b. 3-28-1911 and d. March, 1987 in Marshall Co., IN. Gilbert PAYNE lived in the Logan County, WV area and I believe is buried at a cemetery named "Twelve Pole"? Wilsonia is believed to be part Cherokee. They had several children including Lanville PAYNE who married Martha SEARGANT. Lanville died in an explosion in Logan, WV in 1988. I know this is very little to go on, but hopefully someone will recognize the names and be able to give me something to work with! This family has been a tough one! Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much! Karen Keleher

    2. This is a suggestion that I am going to make to all the lists to which I subscribe. I hope it is a good one and will be received in the spirit in which it is sent! :) In the interest of saving time AND because there are those out there bent on sending us viruses to destroy our hard and soft ware, please include the name of the List somewhere in the subject line, even when it is something sent to give us a thought or a smile. I very rarely open an e-mail unless I recognize the sender or it has the name of the list in the subject line. I made an exception on this referenced message because it sounded like it was from a fellow searcher! But, as the witching hour for the Y2K approaches, I am getting less and less inclined to do so. Please don't let us scanners miss an important message or perhaps a link you are seeking. Take time to add your surname to the subject line. Thanks for reading and happy hunting! Anne Nelson Tulsa

    3. I am researching the family of my Great-great-great-grandfather, Joseph Payne/Paine c1762-1839, a widower who married Jane Rowe c1784-1850 in the village of Great Addington. [As neither Joseph Payne/Paine nor his wife Jane Rowe are recorded in the parish registers of Great Addington, except for this wedding and both their funerals, they probably came from another parish. Family tradition says that the Payne/Paine family originated in Thrapston where there were families of similar names about this time] The children from this second marriage were: Joseph bn c1813; Benjamin bn c1815; Ann bn c1821-1841; James bn & d 1823; William bn & d 1823; James c1825-1888 m 1848 Harriet Beeby c1831-1897; Eliza c1827-1829. William Payne/Paine and Harriet Beeby had the following children: William bn 1850 m[1] Jane Carl(e)ton m(2) Catherine 'Kate' Callaghan; Joseph bn 1852; Ann bn 1854; Robert bn before 1856; James bn before 1859; John bn 1860-1907; David bn before 1863-1943 m Margaret [He was landlord of the Hare and Hounds in Great Addington in 1914]; Sarah Jane bn before 1867; Eliza bn before 1867; Benjamin 1870 - 1931. Various official records give the surname as PAYNE and yet other records give it as PAINE for the same person. The family was still in Great Addington in 1943. 3. Who is this David Hailey and William Payne? "Quaker Records in Georgia" Part 1 is Wrightsborough. On page 3-4..." "The Board deferred action on this Petition (desiring to come to Georgia) until the families should actually come into the colony. By February 1751 only Gray, John Young, David Hailey, John Ayers, George Tarr, Joshua Griffee and William Payne had arrived, and on February 27 they presented their petitions for allotments of land; however, only four allotments were made. Edmund Gray was allotted 500 acres in the fork of Savannah River and Little River on Feb 27 (2), and John Young was allotted 200 acres adjoining Gray on December 18 (3). On the latter date, George Tarr and William Payne received allotments for land in the Indian Country, fully 20 miles north of Gray and Young, who were at the extreme northeast frontierline." ------end----------- From: "Randy Haley" <velocity@mediaone.net> To: HALEY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [HALEY] David Haley Date: Thu, 9 Dec 1999 21:27:14 -0500 I should read before I leap (to conclusions, that is). The following is an excerpt from HR&F Chapter VIII: "At June Court for Halifax in 1756, John Marston had a suit at law versus James Haley, in case. David Haley and William Payne were his securities in case he lost the case." Could this be the same David Hailey and William Payne found 5 years earlier, in the Quaker records that David Payne presented us? Alas, it appears that David Haley Sr. DID find time for adventuring between lawsuits. ______________________________ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
