    1. Sarah/Sally PAYNE:marr. Sam tucker, 1800's
    2. Have a Sally/Sarah PAYNE, born either November 26, 1840, (per grandma's info) or December 26 (as stated on her death certificate.) Grandma said she was from (West) Virginia, but thanks to a very kind David Payne for giving me some info, I believe she was born in Tennessee. she married Sam TUCKER September 29, in 1863 in Grundy County, TN. Had daughter Mariah TUCKER in 1874 in Tracy City, TN. Sarah/Sally died on August 17, 1924, in Eldorado, IL. she is buried in Wolf Creek Cemetery. The informant on the death certificate was George Parks. I understand from David, that Mariah had a sibling by the name of James TUCKER. David was also kind enough to send me the direct ancestor line of Sally/Sarah, so I also now know that Sarah's parents were Susan KEY and George Washington PAYNE! More than happy to share info if anyone is interested... Sally in Michigan

    3. Hey Bob, If you really look at what ya got here, your first entries site grants to land on Obids Creek in Wilkes Co. NC to Thomas Paine and low and behold, there is Moses Ayers (husband of Abigale). In your last entry, notice that here again is Thomas Payne (of Franklin County GA) selling land on Obids Creek!!! Now if this isn't VERY strong evidence that our Thomas Payne is the father of Abigale, then I really must be missing something here. Let's sum this up. 1) Thomas Payne m. Yanaka Ayers in same County of VA at the same time as Moses Ayers. 2) Moses Ayers is the brother of Yanaka. 3) Moses Ayers marries Abigale Payne 4) Moses Ayers in Wilkes County NC in 1778---see land grant below 5) Moses Ayers and Abigale in Franklin County, GA in early 1780s. 6) Land Grants for a Thomas and a William Payne along Tugaloo River issued from South Carolina in the early 1780s. Bet if we looked, we would find Moses Ayers got land also. 7) Several Cherokee Indian Villages along the Tugaloo and Broad Rivers within 20 mile radius of Payne Creek. North Carolina was a proprietary colony, with the Earl of Granville holding title to much of the land. Residents of the Old North State before the Revolution paid a quit rent to the Earl for some years then perhaps could acquire title to the land they lived on. In 1777 the North Carolina legislature passed a confiscation act which took the Earl of Granville's holdings and transferred title to the State. The state in turn issued land grants to its citizens for a nominal fee, for which the inhabitants or land speculators could acquire the land fee simple. The problem of claim jumping was not as bad as it was in Virginia for reasons which are not entirely clear. One reason may be the fees required to for land grants made the land more affordable than in Virginia. 2. Ray, I appreciate your help. As I still do not understand how these viruses work, could you clarify for me? If I were going to send you a file of my Payne line, I would write you an E-mail and attach the file to it. You would read my message and decide whether to open the attached file. If I were the recipient of an automatic virus, would it attach to what I send you or would it capture your address and send its own attached file? Are you saying that it would come with a message that you would read to be sure it was from me? This is all so confusing! I know we have to be careful, and I certainly want to be, but I'm just not sure I know how. Anyway, thanks for your help Anne Nelson

    2. In a message dated 12/15/99 6:23:54 AM Central Standard Time, PAYNE-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: << > In the interest of saving time AND because there are those out there bent on > sending us viruses to destroy our hard and soft ware, please include the name > of the List somewhere in the subject line, even when it is something sent to > give us a thought or a smile. I very rarely open an e-mail unless I > recognize the sender or it has the name of the list in the subject line. >> here is something that may be of help. because some viruses are automatic and go from your email address list to other people and then goes out on their list without any of us doing anything, i don't open any file i get, even if someone i know, unless there is something personal written in the email. there thus has to be either a HELLO HOW ARE YOU or THIS IS FROM JOHN PAYNE or such before i will open the attached file and there has to be a signature matching the person who sent it, one way or another. when the HAPPY.EXE virus hit a friend of mine i got an email from him with the happy virus attached as it was automatic and he was not even aware that he had it at the time. i alerted him and he removed just as i deleted it without even looking at it or getting it. so be aware the file containing the virus CAN be from someone you know and trust but not be deliberate so act accordingly. i know this is not the subject of this list but i am just offering some advice to all of you cause you are so generous with your help on the list. ray lewis payne

    1. Re: Name:
    2. Lewis-- I don't think any of us can begin to recognize the names of everyone who writes to the list. If, however, PAYNE is written as a part of the subject line, then we will know that the message is about searching for ancestors named Payne. Actually, using a format something like "William PAYNE b1812 Ga>TX" is helpful. Those whose ancestor was born in a completely different time frame or different area wouldn't have to spend a lot of time reading the message. Anne
