Fellow Payne Researchers, I am not fortunate enough to own the "Paynes of Virginia". I would have purchased a copy if I had been able to prove a connection. I know many of you have the book and I am interested in obscure piece of information that it contains. During a visit to a library in Nashville, TN I read a sentence or two about one of the Paynes who left Virginia and settled "near Scottsville KY" or "near Allen Co. Scottsville KY". I would really like to know the name of this fellow and where he links to the family. If anyone knows where this passage is in the book I would appreciate the info and the page number. Alan Driver

Hello folks, This Moses Payne of Surry County NC is of much interest to me. The Document cited would put his birth at apout 1878. I have estimated the birth of my Moses at about 1886 from census records. Knowing how unreliable they can be for dertirmining ones age, could this be him? Ya,ll let me know your thoughts on this. I have all but illiminated the Moses who was sheriff of Franklin County and the Moses who was in Tennesee. The US Census Dekalb County Georgia 1850 shows listed on page 160 Moses Payne 63 farmer born in South Carolina, with Winnie E. female 37 born in South Carolina, William J. 15 male born in South Carolina, Margaret C. 13 female born in South Carolina, and Moses M. 8 male born in Georgia. Next door was Joseph Payne and Phobe. Also listed in the Stones District DeKalb 1850 is Elizabeth Paine on page 165. Payne Alexander DeKalb 98 Stone Moontain The above seems to indicate that Moses came to Georgia between 1837 and 1842. The US Census 1860 Campbell County Georgia shows Mosses Paine age 76, with Winnie age 46, Margaret age 18, and William age 25. The US Census 1870 Campbell County Georgia shows Moses Paine age 87, with Magie 36 and Jane 10. Death Certificate of William Joseph Payne gives his father's name as Moses Payne. >Does anyone out there know about this Moses Payne, stepson of Moses Ayers? > > >----Original Message Follows---- >From: "McCreary, Dennis & Barb" <stnpride@linkline.com> >Reply-To: "McCreary, Dennis & Barb" <stnpride@linkline.com> >To: ><rayers@webtv.net>,<shpxlcp@home.com>,<ThatBeBob@aol.com>,<john.wilmot@mindspri >ng.com>,"David >Payne" <otime@hotmail.com> >CC: "Sue Dinse" <wfordsue@aol.com> >Subject: Re: Moses Payne. Looking for any info on the following persons: NANCY PAIN/PAYNE born 1799 in NC probably Caswell county. She married ANTHONY SUMMARS about 1814 and migrated to TN. There are 3 PAYNE names listed in the Caswell area in the 1800 census that could be her father. JESSE,JOHN OR JOSEPH all of these had a child young enough in the household.Nancy is listed in the 1870 Cannon county census as living with her son Anthony B Summars and is listed as age 70. MARY ELIZABETH PAYNE born 1798 NC and married JAMES MARTIN ARMSTRONG 9-12-1817 in Wilson county TN. They had 6 known children.Rachel 7-1834;Andrew 1830;Henry 1832;Mary 1836;John 1839 and Gideon 1841. Mary Elizabeth died after 1880. I would be most interested in finding her parents so as to take this line further back. Debra Carter tara37@comsys.net

I noticed that there was no mention of Moses Payne (b. 28 Nov 1777), the step-son of Moses Ayers, possibly being a *left-over* from a previous marriage of Moses himself, rather than Abigail. It is believed (I think) that Moses had at least one, and possibly two wives prior to Abigail. For the possible second wife (Ann?), I have that she married Moses between 1775-1779, then died not long after the birth of their probable child Obadiah c1779. If that were all accepted as accurate, then it is easy to see that Ann may have been the widow of a Mr. Payne with an infant son. She married Moses Ayers soon after the death of her other husband and had a child (or children) with him. About 1782, she died herself, leaving Moses with the whole set of children, possibly including a 5-ish year old boy whom Moses had raised since infancy, but who was actually his step-son. (It all works out just as well, too, if Ann had Moses Payne out of wedlock.) I have seen this Ann refered to as Ann Payne, though I have no idea why, or if that should be believed. If it were true though, she would be as good a candidate for the mother of Moses Payne as Abigail. Also, we know that Moses Ayers was associated closely with the Paynes well before he married Abigail; this theory would at least partially explain why. As to why the child would not have been given to a member of the "real" father's family to raise, I can easily see the possibility that Abigail Payne was the actual aunt of little Moses Payne by blood, in which case her raising him would not have been an odd thing. Anyway, like I said, I am not an Ayers researcher, and I am not that familiar with the family details. This realy was just to point out that there are other perfectly plausible theories for the Moses Payne/Moses Ayers situation which don't involve Abigail. Does anyone have information on a "Private account made by Daniel Payne (A-VII-13) purporting to be based on what his father related to him. This account dated 4 July 1856" from Col. Brookes Payne Book "Paynes of Virginia (version 10 page 8). Col. Payne states on page 224 "Particularly convincing is the fact, shown by the document referred to in Version 10 and still preserved in the family, that my great-grandfather Capt. William Payne (b. 1755) recognized his relationship to the Paynes of Fairfax Co., near whom he lived. I lay stress on this point on the identity of the said William Payne because it is a critical one." Col. Payne is stating that William Payne of Westmoreland died in 1697/8 m. Elizabeth Pope was the son of John and Margaret Payne of Westmoreland, and that the Daniel Payne account showed a relationship to a Capt William Payne (father of Daniel) who was a descendant of Joh and Margaret Payne of Old Rappahannock, Va. mid 1600s. However, in Version 10 on page 8, Col. Payne mentions the statement, but does not give any details of Daniel's statement. I am wondering if any of the researchers on the Payne list have read or know of the details of Daniel Payne's statement that would show that a Capt. William Payne was related to the Paynes of Fairfax County, Va., which were descendants of William Payne of Westmoreland. Thank you, Nancy Norman
Hi List,, I have a moment to post something (I am home with my 5-week-old grandson while his parents have a much-deserved night out. He is sleeping through all the New Year hoopla, imagine that (no Y2K glitches with bottles and diapers...) One of my 2g-grandfathers is Robert Gordon Payne, b. abt. 1849 in Fauquier Co, Va. He married Mary Lewis Holtzclaw 23 Dec. 1874 in Culpeper Co., Va. They had a daughter named Susan Anna Payne. I don't have any information on any siblings, if any, for her! I know Mary Lewis Holtzclaw must be a Germanna descendant, although I don't have the connection on her yet, either. Susan's daughter franklin ("Frankie") is still living and I spoke with her by telephone a few months back, but she just isn't too interested in gen research and wasn't too helpful - there was a lot she simply couldn't recall. She did remember that her grandfather went by Gordon. If anyone has additional info or knows of other children for Robert and Mary, I would love to hear from you. I did find Robert Gordon Payne listed on the "Paynes of Virginia" website and have a lineage for him, but I need filler and confirmations and I would like to meet some cousins! The "problem" with Windows being set to show a 2-digit date is not going to cause your computer to crash. However, many people will want to change to the 4-digit date via Control Panel. I myself will stick with 2-digits, as the computer programs are doing "windowing" and interpreting 2-digit dates in the high ranges as 1900 numbers, and those from 00-32 as being 2000 series numbers. I am doing research on John Payne who immigrated from Killinagh, Cavan, Ire in 1801 to Chestnuthill, Northampton Co., PA. on March 29, 1812 he married Elizabeth Buskirk. Before 1825 they moved to Newfield, Tompkins Co., NY. His brothers LANTY PAYNE and JAMES PAYNE immigrated to Newfield in 1823. A brother THOMAS PAYNE stayed in Ireland. He had a sister MARY ELIZABETH PAYNE who married THOMAS PATTERSON in 1835. I would like to correspond with anyone doing research on this PAYNE line. Jane Ashby

I know that I had not thought of this and my home and work computer would have failed Jan 1st. Easy fix, but somthing Microsoft sems to have missed in certifying their software as Y2K compliant. Simple to do, but very important! Click on SETTINGS double click on "Control Panel" Scroll down and dbl click on "Regional Settings" (the little world globe) Click on the "Date" tab at the top of the page Where it says "Short Date Sample", look and see if it shows a "2 digit " year format, ie. (YY). Unless you've previously changed it (and I didn't know it was there......LOL) - it will set incorrectly with just the 2 YY's. It needs to be four! That's because Microsoft made the 2 digits setting the default setting for Windows 95 & 98, and NT. This date format selected is the date that Windows feeds "ALL" application software and will not rollover into the year 2000; It will roll over to the year 00. (*) Click on the button across from the "Short date style" and select the option that shows, "mm/dd/yyyy". Be sure you have 4 Y's, not 2 Y's. Click "Apply" Then click "OK" Easy enoungh to fix. Would anyone have information on Richard Payne decd in 1691 in Old Rappa? I had thought this Richard was the son of John Payne and Margaret of Old Rappa. The problem is that there is a Richard Payne transported into Old Rappa from England in 1684 with 24 other persons. Also, in the list of 24 was a John Battaile who would letter be involved with estate of Richard Payne. I also found a Richard Payne m. Jane Payne in 1711 in Richmond County, VA. I cannot find a mention of this Richard in Col. Brookes Payne's Book "Paynes of Virginia" nor is there a mention of the Richard Payne, decd., in 1691. Col. Payne states that Richard Payne (son of John Payne & Margaret) was still alive in 1695 as shown in a record with Richard and George Payne. I am wondering if Richard Payne had a son, Richard, that appears in 1711. I am glad to share information. Thank you, Nancy Norman
