    1. West Virginia PAYNES
    2. Hello! I am looking for information on John Marian PAYNE, b. abt 1885, married to Mary Ann VANCE, b. May 1885. They were from Mingo/Logan Counties, West Virginia. Children included the following: Sarah J. b. 1910 Gilbert L. b. 3-1-12 Theordore b. 1914 Leander b. 1917 I have found Mary and her children in the 1920 Mingo Co. census, living with her father, Jackson VANCE, so I am assuming he (John PAYNE) died prior to that. Gilbert L. PAYNE was married to a woman named Wilsonia. I have no other information on her at this time, although I am awaiting her SS card application copy from Baltimore. They had a son, Lanville, who was killed in an explosion in Logan Co., WV in 1988. Do any of these PAYNE family members ring with anyone? I would appreciate any assistance you can offer. Thank you so much!! Karen Keleher

    2. My father, born in 1914 in Madison Co., NC, worked in either the WPA, CCC or TVA when he was about 16 years old. My aunt said he built roads. Does anyone have any idea which of these projects were in progress in the Madison County area abt. 1930ish (possibly + or - a few years)? Does anyone know where I could possibly get a list of employees of the programs or their web sites, I'd like to do some research on the program he was involved with. Thank you. 3. A NOTE OF ENCOURAGEMENT: If someone on the list does live near the U of VA & has worked in the manuscript material directly, I would urge him/her to continue to do so, with the goal of published extracted material on this list, leading up to a more complet hardcover publication. Such a project would be ideal for Gateway or Genealogical Pub or Heritage Books and would be a MAJOR contribution to 16th-19 cent. historical and genealogical research. I myself am working in the Shattuck papers at the NEHGS. So far, there's nothing there that Shattuck hasn't touched on in his pioneering NE works, but there is material highly usuful for individvual families. I'm preparing a more detailed catalog for my own use but will give to the Society, which has recognized how vastly underutilized its mansucript holdings are (mostly due to the bibliographic problem of poor catalog which puts a significant barrier in front of people doing name searches). So, if anyone has used these Payne papers, please consider undertaking it as a serious scholarly endeavor. After all, do this right and your name will NEVER go out of print! ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Col. Brooke Payne died in the year following the publishing of "The Paynes of Virginia", therfore unable to pursue publishing other PAYNE volumes. However, his files survived him, I think in about 22 boxes which were contributed by his family to the University of Virginia Library. One needs permission from the university (& probably an appointment) to study his files. I'm working from memory here, and if I'm wrong, someone please correct me. I know that a relative few (at least one) on this list have actually spent time perusing his files. Danny Payne sdcaller@icon.net

    3. Hello - I joined this list yesterday. I have just received the first email from PAYNE-L. What fabulous first impressions this list makes!! The very first thing I read is: snip >I am unsubcribing from this list > because I cannot accept the behavior that I have witnessed. If a group of > people cannot be laid back or civil enough to simply read what someone wrote > without going ballistic, then I do not belong with them. snip I am NOT taking issue with the person who wrote of the decision to unsubscribe. I AM wondering loudly about what kind of people would drive another to that decision and not give a second thought that this might be someone's first impression of the list. I will wait to see what the second email from PAYNE-L brings. I already wonder "what have I gotten myself into?" Gena

    3. List, I have to agree here. I am one of the younger generations who is searching for my roots, and I am disappointed in what I have heard. Whether we like it or not, we are family and I was always taught that we accept each other no matter what. The submission was very insightful and true. The truth hurts. I am still trying to figure out what was so bad about it. I am unsubcribing from this list because I cannot accept the behavior that I have witnessed. If a group of people cannot be laid back or civil enough to simply read what someone wrote without going ballistic, then I do not belong with them. I know that this is a GENEALOGY mailing list. However, this is also a place for the Payne family to gather. I think that it is nice to hear the opinions and stories that others tell because it gives us all an idea of what each family member is like. Most likely, several of us will never meet, and this may be the only way to learn about each other. I compare it to sitting around and talking to my grandfather about life. How sad that no one else can see that. I think that I will stick with the mailing lists, or families, that appreciate good conversations and respect each other enough to listen to them. They do not mind learning or listening to each other because, after all, their family. Jill Hagelin Debbie Carter wrote: > I personally enjoyed the piece you sent in.
