This is in reply to Tammy who asked whether there is anyone with a connection to Newfoundland Paynes. I'm replying to the list in case this may be of interest to others. I have traced my maternal line back to John Payne and Sarah Cross Singleton who married in 1809 and who lived and raised their family in Rocky Harbour on the Northern Peninsula in Newfoundland. They were both natives of England, but I haven't traced them back there. I believe John Payne's grave stone says that he was a native of Jersey. Also, I believe that the original spelling of the name was Paine -- later changed to Payne. I don't know whether he would have had any connection to Paynes in Quirpon, Newfoundland. A story says that he deserted from a Man o' War, and that's how he ended up in Newfoundland. There is an interesting story about John Payne and Sarah Cross Singleton and how they came to be married in St. John's, Nfld., which was a long distance from Rocky Harbour in those days. The story is related on this Newfoundland genealogical website: http://www.huronweb.com/genweb/nf.htm Click on: Regions: Northern Pen(insula): St. Barbe South District: Oral History: Cow Head. One of the regional co-ordinators of this site is Alexander (Sandy) Payne. Another excellent site for Newfoundland genealogical research is: http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Heritage/NGB/ Hope this is of some assistance to any who may have Pain/Paine/Payne relatives who went to or came from Newfoundland. You can contact me privately at lchat@home.com if I can help. Best to all. Leona Chatwood
I am looking for any info regarding Henry PAYNE born about 1760 married Rachel Thompson 12-17-1795 in Orange county NC, Henry died 5-28-1837. Hello, In a book about the emigration from Flanders during the 16th century "Bannelingen en Vluchtelingen uit Ronse" J.H. Bekouw, Amsterdam 1941, You can find a lot off different Payne, Pain, Paine, Payeth, Pein,... . My special interest goes on page 153 off this book. "Lucas Payne, lynnenwever, father in lawe to the said Mighell (Griffen), Annijs, his daughter, Roger & Lucas his sonnes borne all in Rostar in Flaunders, they pay the said Mighell no rent, because he is his wife's father; they go to the Dutch Church. ..." This Lucas Payne has to be VANPEENE. He's born in Roeselare (Belgium) and died in London 1587. By the way, Ronse isn't the same for Rostar. Rostar must be Roslar (=Roeselare). This Lucas VANPEENE had a lot off children in the area off London. Some off them had the name Payne, Pain, Peene and Peen. None off them were called as VAN PEENE. Maybe someone off the Payne-list has this Lucas Payne as his ancestor. Please, let me know if you are in this case. The index off the said book gives the following names: PAIJNE, PAIJN, PAIN, PAIJEN, PAYER, PAIJNS, PAYETH. Anna- Anna Margaretha- Annijs- Arthur- Barbara- Carolus- Charles- Cäcilia (born Schnelle)- Collaert- Daniël- David- Gillis- Gorijs- Gosson- Hermes- Jacob- Jan- Johannes- John- Joris- Lodewijck- Louis- Lucas- Maicken- Marrijken- Paulus- Petrus- Peter- Pieter- Roger- Sara- Thomas. PEENE, PENEN, PEIJNE, PEIN, PIJN(E), PIJNS, PIENE, (van): Agnes- Anna- Catharina- Cornelis- Goffreij- Jakemijne- Jacob- Jan- Johan- Johanna- Joosken- Joris- Lucas- Nicholas- Peter- Rogier- Williken. If someone wants some information off this names you can ask it to me. You can find more information about the history off the family on my site http://come.to/peene Belgium greetings. --- Werner Peene Tempelierstraat 15 B-8470 GISTEL http://come.to/peene
2nd Letter from CRANMER to CROMWELL, after the death of Hugh PAYNE at Marshalsea Prison, dated 5 Feb. 1538 CCXV. To CROMWELL: My very singular good lord, in my most hearty wise I commend me to your lordship. And whereas the benefice of SUTTON MAGNA, within the county of ESSEX, of the patronage of Margaret WYATE, widow, and George COVERTE, alternis vicibus, being void this last year, came in controversy of the law, which of them should present the incumbent, so that either of them presented one to the said benefice; the said Margaret WYATE presenting Sir John GYLDERDE of RAYLEY, in the county of ESSEX, a man, as I am credibly informed, both for his literature, good judgment, and honest conversation, worthy of commendation and preferment; and the said George COVERTE presenting one Sir Hugh PAYNE, late observant, whom I knew neither to be of good learning nor judgment, but a seditious person, and I suppose your lordship knew the same: of the which two persons so presented, the bishop of London [STOKESLEY], notwithstanding that the matter was then in controversy, and not favouring so much the learning and judgment of the said Sir John of RAYLEY as he did Sir Heugh PAYNE'S, gave the institution unto the said Sir Heugh PAYNE, leaving the patroness in suit at the common law for the same; which said suit hath ever since continued, until now that at this time the said Sir Heugh PAYNE, being in the Marshalsea for his demerits, is departed: and now, forasmuch as the said Margery WYATE, pretending the maintenance not only of her just title unto the said benefice, but also the discharging of her conscience in the same, hath once again presented the said Sir John of RAYLEY, being very loth that the benefice should be bestowed upon such as afore time have been drowned in superstitious religion, as partly she feareth that one ROCHE, late observant, will promote himself thereunto as much as in him lieth: these shall be therefore to beseech your lordship, in consideration of her godly mind in this behalf, and to the intent that the said bishop of London may with better will accept the said Sir John of RAYLEY, to direct your letters in his favour unto the said bishop of London, requiring him to induct the said Sir John without further interruption; forasmuch as the said COVERTE can claim no more at the most, but to present once against the said Mistress WYATE twice; and therefore it seemeth to me, that he can have no colour of interest in the said benefice at this time, Sir Heugh PAYNE dying in possession, who was by him last presented. And in thus doing your lordship shall do for the advancement of God's word, which I think is but easily set forward in ESSEX. Thus, my lord, right heartily fare you well. At Ford, the viith day of February, [1538.] Your own assured ever, T. CANTUARIEN. To the right honourable and my singular good lord, my lord privy seal.
Hi, I noticed that everyone here seems to be searching in the US. Is anyone out there connected to the Paynes in Newfoundland, specifically in the Fogo/Twillingate area. The farthest I can go back is March 1870 or 1871 to William J. Payne, he married Harriet Ann Guy born in Quirpon, Newfoundland. Her father was John Guy. I would love to hear from anyone connected to these people. Thank you Tammy

Hello again, I received an inter-library loan I'd been waiting on today which includes a transcript of the letter that Thomas CRANMER, Archbishop of Canterbury, wrote to Sir Thomas CROMWELL in 1537 regarding Sir Hugh PAYNE, the ex-Observant friar of Hadleigh, Suffolk (the home of Ann, daughter of John WHITING, who married William PAYNE in 1601 and of the CASTELL family, of which Martha CASTELL married Anthony PAYNE abt. 1564). I previously posted a fairly detailed account about Hugh to the list. If you missed it, or just need a refresher, it is located at <http://www.payn.org/pfhs-intro.shtml>http://www.payn.org/pfhs-intro.shtml I'm including the text of the letter below along with some of the questions it raised for me. If you'd rather have the html formatting, it is located at <http://www.payn.org/hugh-payne.shtml>http://www.payn.org/hugh-payne.shtml Letter from Thomas CRANMER, Archbishop of Canterbury, to Sir Thomas CROMWELL regarding Hugh PAYNE, Curate of Hadleigh, Suffolk, 28 January 1537 (the following letter transcribed from "The Works of Thomas Cranmer- Miscellaneous Writings and Letters of Thomas Cranmer," edited for the Parker Society by the Rev. John Edmund Cox, M.A., F.S.A., of All Souls' College, Oxford, Curate and Lecturer of Stepney, vol. II, Cambridge: printed at The University Press) CLXXXIII. To CRUMWELL (CROMWELL) My very singular good lord, in my most hearty manner I commend me unto your lordship. And whereas I received a letter from you, wherein you will me to send Sir Hugh PAYNE unto you after his appearance, whom ye are informed that I acited to appear before me; your lordship shall understand, that the said Sir Hugh PAYNE was curate of Hadleigh in the county of Suffolk, of my particular jurisdiction, and for his erroneous and seditious preaching there he was detected to me: upon which detection I sent for him; and in the mean space, while he stood in examination, I commanded him, before doctor REVET, parson of Hadley, that he should not preach within my diocese or peculiars; which by my commandment he disobediently contemning, did both preach at Hadley and also at London in my peculiars there. And in his examination had before me concerning those things wherein he was detected, he was proved openly perjured. And that he there erroneously preached, a taste of his teaching your lordship shall perceive. He taught openly in the pulpit there, that one paternoster, said by the injunction of a priest, was worth a million paternosters said of a man's mere voluntary mind: by this you may soon savour what judgement this man is of, and how sincerely he would instruct the people. At the last he, seeing these things proved against him, submitted himself to my correction. And whereas I might by justice have pronounced him perjured, and farther have proceeded against him for his erroneous preaching, I enjoined to him but certain pennance. and not so much as he deserved; which he did receive, and swear by the holy evangelists to accomplish the same. And therein again he was forsworn and did it not, but fled into the said county of Suffolk again, and became a parish priest and a preacher at Stoke Nayland, where he is (as I am informed) as well liked as he was at Hadley. I hearing that he was there, caused him to be cited to appear before me; which thing he did not: whereupon I did excommunicate him, and so now for his contumacy he standeth excommunicate. And if he come unto me, I will send him to your lordship; but in the mean space these my letters are to desire your lordship that you will put with me your helping hand to see him punished: for although many of the observants were wolves in sheep's skins, yet in my opinion he ought to give place to none of them in dissimulation, hypocrisy, flattery, and all other qualities of the wolfish Pharisees. Furthermore I send unto your lordship herewithal a letter directed to me by a monk of Christ's church in Canterbury, named Dan John WALKEHAM, concerning certain directions. Upon which letter this day I have examined Dan Stephen GYLES and Dan John STONE, monks; and I have sent for Dan Thomas BECKET to examine him to-morrow. And as for John STONE, I have committed him to ward: beseeching your lordship that I may know with expedition the king's grace's pleasure concerning the ordering of these persons. Over this I have received letters directed both unto your lordship and to me from Turney of CALICE (CALAIS); and because your letters concern divers matters, I have sent you mine also, thinking it good that your lordship know the contents thereof. Thus, my lord, right heartily fare you well. At Ford, the 28th day of January [1537.] Your own ever assured, T. CANTURIEN. (To the right honourable and my singular good lord, my lord privy seal. ) references are then given regarding the preaching of Observants: Vid. letters CXVIII. CXLIII. CLXXIX., pp. 291, 303, 330 Questions: Why would CROMWELL have written to CRANMER asking him about Sir Hugh PAYNE and that he be sent to him? Why would CRANMER return such a detailed reply to CROMWELL on his reasons for examining Sir Hugh PAYNE? Why would CRANMER require CROMWELL'S hand to punish Sir Hugh PAYNE? After all, CRANMER was the Archbishop of Canterbury and Sir Hugh fell within his jurisdiction! CROMWELL was a politician, not an ecclesiastic... Who was John STONE and what was his relationship to the family of Samuel STONE that lived in Sisted, Essex, near to both Hadleigh, Suffolk and to "Stoke Nayland" (now called Stoke-by-Nayland) where Hugh preached? Or the family of STONE'S involved with the PAYNE'S in BOTH New England and Virginia/Maryland? Both of these villages (Hadleigh and Stoke Nayland) are on the border of Suffolk and Essex and near the homes of the WINTHROP'S "of Groton" (who initiated the Iron Works at Saugus), Edward PAYNE "of Alphamstone", Henry PAYNE and Ann ALSTON "of Boxford," and the GATES family "of Kentwell Hall." Recall that a Henry PAYNE accomanied Sir Thomas GATES as a member of his camp (along with John ROLFE and Stephen HOPKINS) aboard the "SEA VENTURE" in 1609. Thoughts:In 1564, 27 years after this letter was written, William STEWARD married Catherine, daughter of Thomas PAYNE, Esq., and his wife Margaret "of Castle Acre, Norfolk". The daughter of William STEWARD and Catherine PAYNE, Elizabeth STEWARD, married Robert CROMWELL (AKA WILLIAMS), Esq., and they were the parents of the Lord Protector, Oliver CROMWELL (whose protege and replacement in Parliament in 1625 was Sir Robert PAYNE). Robert CROMWELL was the son of Sir Henry CROMWELL, the grandson of Sir Thomas CROMWELL above. Henry's father (Robert's grandfather), Gregory CROMWELL, died and was buried in Leicestershire, as was his wife, Elizabeth SEYMOUR, daughter of John SEYMOUR and Margery (or Margaret) WENTWORTH. Leicestershire was the home of Sir Thomas PAYNE up until the family removed to Suffolk (near Hadleigh where Hugh preached) prior to 1521. Additionally, Oliver CROMWELL received an inheritance of land in Ely, very near to St. Neot's (the home of Sir Robert PAYNE) from his maternal uncle, Sir Thomas STEWARD "of Huntingdonshire." for additional information on Sir Hugh PAYNE, see my page at http://www.payn.org/pfhs-intro.shtml or read Diarmaid McCulloch's, "Thomas CRANMER." My birth name is Janet Horton, but many years ago, I hyphenated it to Horton-Payne to include my mother's Payne side of the family. It didn't take long for a friend of mine to start introducing me as his dear friend, Janet Hurtin' Pain, and thus it has remained in the minds and hearts of many.
My son's name is Bryant Payne Anderson and of course his older sisters called him Bryant P*A*I*N* in the assmenoquestions. He is 14 now and enjoys being a pest to almost all at all times.. Haha ...I guess I named him honestly.. Kay
> RE: > WHAT ! No Ima Paine in the whole bunch??? > > diane No, but I did just find another one. Iva.
I just had to jump in here with my two unusual names. Some of you might think I made thest up but they were (are) really. My husband was going to school for 6 months in 1964 at the Naval base in the Great Lakes. One day our five year old son came home telling me about the people who just moved in across the street. Their last name (I don't think it go over on the internet ), but yes it was F __ __ k. I told him that could not be their last name, because that was a bad word and I didn't want him to say I again. The next day, I had to remind him that it was a bad word and not to say it again or I would wash his mouth out with soap. Well, the next day I had the bar of soap in my hand and thought "before I do this I should go over and introduce myself and find out the correct name. To my great surprise HE WAS RIGHT. Can you imagine how shocked I was. The couple had 3 boys and 1 girl. In order not to hurt anyone's feelings since these individuals are still living I will not mention the first names, Male Andrew (family member) married Female Screws, they have a daughter and named her _____________ Screws Andrew. And I only thought I had it rough when people teased me about my name "Hazel", the medicine and cartoon character "Witch Hazel" and "Hazel the Maid" Shirley Booth, then to add "Payne" in the neck and other parts of the body, and here comes a "Payne". If only people would realize the hurt the child will have to endure throughout their lives with names such as these. Later,
