Does anyone know what Payne family is referred to in the following excerpt from a relative's obituary in 1902: "The Payne family is of great antiquity and one of the oldest in this country. John and William Payne, brothers of Sir Robert Payne, came over to America in 1620. They were both knighted by King James I before leaving England. Mrs. B's particular branch of the family were 6 brothers who settled on the James River in Virginia." Is this a serious and researchable bit of family history, or just some family legend? William PAYNE was born 1796 in NC and died 1861 in Sumner Co, TN. He served in the war of 1812 and in the Indian Wars of 1814-1819. He married Margarette BROWN in 1821 (in NC or TN?) The 1850 census in Sumner Co., TN lists him in the lumber trade. Their children include: Robert Sounders b1823; Mary (Pattie) b1827; Greenwood b1831; William b1833; Melvina Martha b1837; and Priscilla b1839/40. I descend from Robert Sounders PAYNE and am looking for anything on the siblings listed above. Ida

One of my Great Great Grandmothers was an Ann Paine, born at Brampton Ash in Northamptonshire in 1817. Her Father was a Joseph who died in 1818 at about the age of 56. Ann had three brothers called Joseph, John and Henry. As she was born in 1817 and her father died in 1818, it is probable that her brothers were older. That would fit with your Joseph being born in 1813. The only problem is that my Ann's mother was also called Ann, whilst your Joseph's mother was Jane - I suppose a second marriage might have been possible with my Ann a step-sister of your Joseph. I haven't got round to researching this branch in detail yet because Ann complicated matters by marrying my Great Great Grandfather whose name was James Paine - in other words, I have two Paine lines to research! I have looked at the map, and the villages of Great Addington are not that far apart and are both adjacent to what is now the A6 and which then was probably the main road connecting Bedford, Kettering and Market Harborough. My Great Grandfather came from Glapthorn to Brampton Ash which is further away than Great Addington, so communications in the area must have been reasonable at that time. Hi all, I am new to the group and just recently started researching my dad's side of the family. I basically have no information, and my dad doesn't remember very much about his fathers side of the family. I am hoping someone in the group will have some info. Basically all I know is my greatgrandfather was Albert Payne - married a Lucy Lunsford. From what I understand, most of the family was in Savannah, where they operated a steamship business. Darlene Jackson Hofer descendent of Boswell Blackburn Payne and Nancy Nettles Payne who were born in TN and moved to Clay County, AR abt. 1843. Have yet to find his parents in TN. Rutherford Cty. is where he was suppose to be born & then spent his teens in Madison Cty., married Nancy Nettles in Dyer Cty. and then about 7 years later it was off to AR where the records are very plentiful.

Payne's materials in the 22 boxes at the University of Virginia: Today I sent a proposal to the LDS Family History Library, SLC, to approach officials at the Alderman Library, University of Virginia, for the purpose of reducing the materials in the 22 boxes in the Payne Collection to either microfilm or CD's, complete with Table of Contents and Index, for use by Payne family researchers upon request.
